Default D5 auto box watering

My sister has been told that the reason her D5 gearbox broke is that a compenent of the water system leaks in to the box and when it boils it wrecks the box. Look for €2,500 to fix. He says its a common problem with them. Does this sound right as it doesn't to me. Its a XC90 2003 D5 diesel.
Thanks

The gearbox oil is cooled by part of the radiator. It does happen that they leak and oil/water mix. Seems cheap if the fix includes gearbox rebuild. Check the drive shafts aren't leaking grease into the gearbox.

I wasn't aware that this was a common problem with D5 Geartronic boxes (and even if you had purchased an aftermarket warranty, it is unlikely to pay out if the failure is caused by a leak) Seems like a cheap repair - is this for a second hand gearbox?
