Default S40 gearbox notch when cold

Hello all you fellow owners out there

My first post on the forum having recently bought a S40.

It’s a 2007 1.8 petrol 43K miles 🙂

I’m finding the car idiosyncratic after years of efficient, mechanical slick Japanese hatchbacks

Which brings me to the S40’s gearbox.

Are they all this notchy ? The first few miles upon start up from cold I’m literally wincing as I change gear. 1st and reverse are difficult to engage and going up the gears - you can feel the cogs almost grating as they engage. Very positive action is required otherwise it baulks

Once the engine/gearbox had warmed up it’s much improved

Is this normal ? I’ve thought possibly the clutch is worn as it’s pretty high bite but I’m lead to believe that’s normal

Thanks for your help and apologies this has been covered before

James

Our 1.6D 5 speed manual is like that occasionally but only in winter cold weather. Basically it doesn't like cold oil it would appear.

no they are not like that , the clutch could be dragging or someone has put the wrong oil in . I would get some genuine volvo oil in there first it has good cold weather performance .
