Looking at 144s Good buy?
Looking as this one but a bit pricy at €4000. 144s 2.0 ltr 1969. 190,000 Km. Would it be a good buy? Prices here are higher in Portugal

You'd have to give us more of a description. Is it a one owner car? What is the mechanical condition like? Does it have any significant history? Are there any signs of body work having been done? Is there any work to be done? She certainly looks very nice. But I think a bit rich, that is a lot of money even for a car that looks so original. Dylan |

Havn't seen it in the flesh yet as it's an 8 hr drive away. Prices here in portugal are high and importing is a no no as import duties are crushing. I may decide to ask for more pics and info before deciding. It does look on the surface a nice car suitable for concours which i am looking for.

Euro Volvo
First impressions are that the car looks good. At around double the price of the maximum book value of a similar UK car it seems a lot, but then European prices are much higher than on this side of the Channel.
Two very similar cars sold on Ebay here last month, one for £600 (a green 73 manual) and the other for £800 ( an off-white 70 auto). The big thing is RUST. If there is none or very little the car has to be considered seriously If there's any major rust (inner and outer wings, chassis, inner rear arches, front crossmember etc) then further approaches should be made with utmost caution! In Holland that car would be worth it, trade in taxfree classics is lively, though at the moment Mercedes Benz is the buzz. In Pt, even cars from the '70 are priced on an as-is basis, and this is a perfectly usable car, with a bit of extra style, so it's worth it, too.
I have a 144 from 1969 and as far as I can compare, this one is complete and original. Someone put the accelerator to the floor quite hard. Most if not all of the 'technical' parts are available, either original or aftermarket. You'd have to look a bit further for interior parts and trim.
VP http://www.vp-autoparts.com/index_staff.htm and CVI http://www.cvi-automotive.se/en/arti...40-73--240-b20 in Sweden both sell original parts. I believe VP took over all Volvo's classic stock, molds and patterns and even sells interiors. That was misbelieve, GCP took over Volvo stock etc, so there you can find all you need for your concours 144: http://global.gcp.se/ GCP also has exploded diagrams for ALL parts online, excellent. Well i bought it. Only paid €1800. cracking motor. Car needs a little bit of work but nothing serious, nothing I can't handle. Will keep you posted as I go along.
There is a leak in the windscreen seal top corner. Can I get a replacement rubber and have it fitted without breaking the glass or should I just seal it with silicon?

Despite the age of your new beasty, it has a bonded screen; let us hope that it is not suffering from rot in the aperture, cos that means a screen out job.
The stainless trim is held on by clips bonded under the screen. These usually rot thereby needing replacement when the screen comes out; even if they haven't rotted the buggers usually snap when trying to lever the trim away from the screen. Conversely, the rear screen is roped in using the rubber seal; the trim on that is the very devil to replace, in fact I gave up trying and have a nice, uncluttered look to my rear screen! C.A. |
