Default Speedo repair

Just having a look at my speedo after looking at the guides to replace the odometer plastic gear. I cant seem to remove the dial sticker without causing damage. The online resources have a square 740 sticker and this seems to make it very easy to grab a corner and peel off to gain access to screws.

Mine is a newer design and I cannot remove the sticker, even with a razor blade.

Finally got the dial sticker off but the assembly is nothing like the online guides.

I have rotated the vertical lime green spindle by hand and both the odometer and trip meter are rotating without any issues…

Looks like corrosion on one of the chips rather than a broken cog…

Ah your reference to the 740 guide threw me.

Yeah 1991 and 1992 speedometer used inferior capacitors that leak and cause corrosion they are very different to the 740 gauges. Quote a few people recently have been saying their speedometers have died. They are specific to those years too so you can't even fit a later speedometer.

An old toothbrush and IPA will clean that corrosion. Looks like you only have two leaky caps on the speedo, the one near the instrument coil and the one near the end of that chip.

Looking at your odo/trip assembly, i can see some wear/damage on the drive gears, not all of them are visible from that angle so can't say for sure but i think there's more gears on the underside and they will likely be the ones missing teeth.

Pressin the trip reset button while the car is moving is the usual cause of broken teeth on the trip/odo mech so worth double checking all drive gears, even if the couter wheels move freely.
