Hi All,

Just got a 2009 XC70 D5 AWD last week. Live on East London / Essex border where we had a huge downpour last night and woke to my interior front light dripping. It has dripped onto the climate controls and the rear heater is now permanently on and the fans blow at full speed constantly even when car is off!!

Fortunately, it has the original screen.

Read this post and pushed the top of the screen from inside and guess what it moves considerably.

Those that contacted Volvo who replied to take to dealer and all will be covered if original screen and bonding issue, did the ones that are successful email or call?

Glad I found this thread, hopefully I can get it sorted, just worried about the climate electrical gremlins that have now occurred.

It’ll only be covered free of charge if the original windscreen doesn’t shatter/break upon removal. If it does, Volvo won’t cover the cost & you have to pay for a new windscreen.

When I had mine fixed I visited the Volvo dealer. But for me, there was no question about re-sealing the original windscreen. Only a replacement was discussed. As it turned out, they replaced it twice, since there was a problem with the new windscreen.

Some dealerships are more helpful than others!

Many stipulate from the outset that you pay for a replacement yourself if your existing one breaks upon removal.

If all goes well & the existing doesn’t break, then its free of charge.

If the existing breaks, you pay for a replacement yourself (Volvo won’t cover it).

So I have had the same with my 58plate S40, Volvo have said they will rebond as it’s original screen but if it breaks I will have to claim on insurance as they will not cover it. But they have told me about 1in7 break and it’s normally because they have existing damage / chips.

I’m risking it as it will be better than trying to replace, they were amazing though when I contacted them no arguing or anything offered to do it for free straight away.

Noticed a water drip from my interior overhead console on my 2010 V70 the other week. This morning was dripping quite a lot onto the centre console. Wondering whether to get the usual insurance replacement screen or asking for a dealership to replace it for free! I can't imagine many dealerships would want to though, despite some people on here having had it done.

The failure of the windscreen bonding is a serious vehicle safety issue which has an effect on the integrity of the body strength. Windscreens these days are more than just sheets of glass through which to look.

Volvo have a clear liability to fix this issue and the attitude of dealers who are not sympathetic to your situation is based on ignorance and a misplaced sense of self interest in dealing with Volvo. If a dealer will not consider immediate remedial action, go directly to Volvo and inform them that their dealer is attempting to deny responsibility on their behalf and that you know that they are aware that this is not an acceptable response.

One downside to this course of action is that Volvo maintain that if, in the course of the repair, the dealer damages the glass screen, you are responsible for its replacement as they are only responsible for renewing the bonding. I suspect that is not legally correct but it is an area where you might have a problem.

I had a badly leaking windscreen on my car and like yourself I was concerned about the safety aspect. I was informed by Volvo there was no recall but my local main Volvo servicer could check out the leak. When I asked my local Volvo servicer about the leak and could they help, I was informed they couldnt. Volvo head office then said try another Volvo service centre. I realised at my time of need that I was on my own to sort this problem out.

Guess what, I woke up to a badly condensate car yesterday and water all over the gear surround. Although I can’t see water on the interior light as many have described, the water is directly below it.

I’m likely to go for an insurance replacement screen as it has a low level crack which doesn’t affect MOT, but obviously not worth removing and replacing.

Assume there are no problems with the sensors that look out of the screen near the rear view mirror on aftermarket screens. My car is specc’d with ACC, collision avoidance, lane depart - not sure where all of those sensors live.

Volvo replaced my windscreen foc as they cracked it getting it out to rebond it.
I didn't even need to kick up a fuss about it. Just an apologetic call to say they'd broken it, and would order a new one to replace it.
