Default Acceleration effected using Air Con Help Please

Hi,
I've a 850 SE 2.0 20v Saloon (with low mileage - N reg). I've only recently purchased it and i notice than when i am driving it and i turn on the Air Con i feel a slight hesitation in acceleration of the car. The rev counter is not affected but when i'm driving on the motorway and i switch the AC on it feels like a gust of wind suddenly blows against the car and causes the acceleration to hesistate for a few seconds. If the Air con is left on then it may do this continually for aslong it's switched on. When this happens i can still accelerate but it feels as though something is pulling the car back from accelerating fully. It's not a massive hesitation but it is noticeable. If anyone would be able to help i would be very grateful. Thanks

Default hesitation with air conditioning on

this is perfectly normal, the air conditioning commpressor does put a higher workload on the engine, i have a 1.6 which is a much more noticable loss than yours. this substanciates the 10 per cent drop in miles per gallon achieved.

Its common, but no it shouldn't do this.

My mothers 850 T5 has this effect (to a lesser extent) but my previous T5 didn't do this at all and the Air Con system was brand new and much more effective.

If it is having as much an effect as you describe I'd get the compressor looked at.

Default Thanks

Thanks alot for your replies. It was worrying me as my the others cars i've been in haven't ever done it. But i will get the compressor looked at, hopefully won't be too expensive. If you have any other thoughts on it please let me know. Thanks again

Hi

Might want to consider an evac and recharge (r134a) with the correct compressor oil, pag I think!. Get a certified a/c specialist to do it.

Mine stopped dragging as soon as I had the a/c serviced, cost about 60 pounds, but you might find it cheaper.

Hope this helps
Matt

Just as an FYI, the air con will switch off automatically when you are in WOT,(wide open throttle), to give more power for acceleration.
