We fitted gates, conti, skf and dayco. Never had we 1 fail in anything and that includes water pumps, timing belts and fan belts.
These are all top quality brands.
If the genuine is close to these in price and easily sourced then fair enough.
But if these products were giving trouble I would have knew. The garage stood over all work. If it failed it was garages problem.
Just a few posts back someone is complaining of a faulty genuine tensioner.
If a fan belt fails it is usually down to faulty pulleys, tensioners or old age. Never have I seen a fan belt fail due to not being genuine.
I would rather have a new skf waterpump or any of those other brands than a genuine volvo one with 100,000 miles. As I stated above. I've yet to see a waterpump I fitted fail.
If your father is a mechanic he will also know this.
For all the people on here who says aftermarket timing kits are rubbish. How many actually fit aftermarket kits for a living and have seen repeated fails and I'm not talking about what some other cowboy fitted and you repaired. I've fitted thousands and i
can tell you now its rubbish.
Most fails of anything is due to poor workmanship.
He’s an aircraft engineer but built and maintained cars for 40 odd years, in fairness I’m not talking about quality brands when I say he wouldn’t fit it, I mean cheap Chinese unbranded **** off eBay

We've had this conversation so many times now... You and I have very different views on the topic of genuine parts, and it's just that - different view points. Mine is born out of experience gained over 20-30 years of which a few I've shared so I'm not going to change my view or not advise people based on it just because someone else doesn't share that view. You're entitled to your view too but what you're not entitled to do is put words in our mouths - we never said all non-genuine parts are all rubbish what I and a number of others are saying is that you have a higher chance or getting a job right first time and the replacement parts lasting longer if you fit genuine Volvo, which of course costs more but given the labour input into some of these jobs and consequences of failure (belts, tensioners, water pump) it's arguably cheaper to use genuine bits.

And I don't see how workmanship could cause a water pump, tensioner or other in 1/3 of the time.

Yes you are entitled to your view. I think you better read over some of the statements which say genuine is a must. The amount of comments like people in the know use genuine. If anything other than genuine you are running her on a shoe string. Its all nonsense.
Other people reading this need to know its not a must and is done regularly and works perfect.

Exactly here you said fit only a genuine pump. This is not you saying you prefer genuine. This is you saying fit only genuine, aftermarket parts will fail and won't make next 108k.
All untrue. Every water pump i changed on every car hasnt failed.
Gates etc make the belts for most manufacturers.
The manufacturers put their badge on it and charge 3 times as much.
So I'm entitled to my opinion too and to let the public know this is wrong information your given out

When I posted that message, I didn’t know that the OP had a genuine Volvo cam belt kit.

My point is, if it wasn’t a genuine kit, I wouldn’t take off a Volvo pump & replace it with some cheap aftermarket part. The aftermarket kit would have to be a decent/reputable brand & not some cheap part from an unknown brand.

However, as the OP has purchased genuine parts & the water pump is included, then it makes sense to change it. However, if the pump wasn’t included in the kit & the genuine one isn’t leaking & spins freely, then it could be left well alone. Water pump failure isn’t common on D5’s (not ones fitted with genuine/quality parts anyway)… its almost unheard of.

Perhaps you could explain why so many aftermaket aux belts fail soon after fitting on an XC90, while genuine ones do not? Surely it cannot be the case that poor fitting workmanship only applies to pattern belts?

A search of this very forum shows the said - and expensive - reality of using aftermarket aux belts on this model.

There are certain items you can safely substitute if you get the correct spec, such as fluids, filters, bulbs, etc, but beyond that why take a chance? If you can't afford to maintain it properly then you'd be better off in a Fiesta.

The OP seems a wise sort and came her for sensible advice. If he was going to Fred in a Shed to buy a fistful of budget parts then I doubt he would have come here asking our advice in the first instance.

Spend cheap, spend twice. Or worse if that aux belt breaks...

Gates water pump started leaking on my old P3 V70 after just 18 months (was fitted when I bought the car) never have I had a genuine Volvo water pump begin to show signs of leaking on any of my other Volvos.

Funny really as actually the prices of genuine parts is not drastically different to non genuine in many cases

I’ve just bought a brand new Volvo battery for my XC90 for £115 inc VAT, no where else could get near it

I will add that I have had a genuine pump fail on a D5.

The mileage at that point was 250k and had 2 cam dots fitted in that time. It must be said it went from a very minor weep, as in it was as slight damp around the pump to running out in just 12 miles. I will say I fitted a Gates pump that I got very cheap as I just need the car to last a few more months at which point it was scrapped anyway.
