You say that but if the car isn't driven far enough at sufficient speed so it gets to work then it won't work. Plus perhaps a different cleaner will help.

A lot cheaper alternative than buggering about with the DPF.

cleaned the egr valve out and the other thingy that joins it.the egr valve was slightly open.the other part wasn't too bad to clean.found a bolt(to fit an 8mm spanner) which replaces the hidden bolt from underneath the egr valve which needed a no 5 allan key i used thinners, petrol and wd 40....now getting blue/white smoke instead of the black smoke....is it a drying/burning process taking place

Its a diesel, so its a simple smoke opacity trst The EGR makes little or no contribution that that, being there as it is to lower nitrous oxide emissions which aren't tested.

You may have an EGR problem, but its unlikely to be the root cause of your MOT failure.

If you go down that route in blanking the egr, make sure to unplug the grey plug as it will throw your eml light. My 2.0l D 199960k has had its egr blanked for 8yrs and flys through the emissions every year!

Blue/ white smoke usually means oil is being burnt which isn't great.

Personally I would give the car a good run and see if it clears (in case it is some residue from cleaning the egr), if it doesn't then more diagnosis needed. There are quite a few possibilities including turbo, valves, piston rings to name just some.......

Of course it can make a difference.
EGR position affects MAF which in turn affects fuelling and fuelling affects smoke output.
