Default possible VVT pulley fail Any recommendations for LEICESTER .

Hi All. Just got my 2004 2.0 litre V40 back from servicing.Full service and complete new exhaust and she's running better than ever. However my mechanic tells me he thinks the VVT pulley needs replacing.I've never heard any noise coming from the engine bay before, maybe because I am a bit deaf but now realise there is a worrying loud rattle present. He says he is not a volvo expert and I should seek an opinion asap. I am looking for a reliable Volvo Indie in or around Leicester, Can anyone help please. How much can I expect to pay, anyone know? Thanks.

YES, that's the noise. Not tried unplugging the solenoid yet but will try that tomorrow. Now,what are the consequences. Is it safe to drive? Is it going to be expensive to replace?. I've been reading some of the relevant posts on the subject, one particular forum member has said on at least two occasions that I have found, that it is a waste of time and money replacing the pulley. No further explanation is given.Surely that can't be right can it.? If I unplug the solenoid can the car be driven. Any advice would be appreciated.

C.P. Motors at Polesworth nr Tamworth are independent Volvo specialists and have been very honest and reliable for the jobs they have done for me. They will diagnose and quote for any work involved.

It's not an issue at all and it won't cause any damage. You just have to live with it.
An alternative, cheeky way to get rid of the noise, is to get another spare used VVT solenoid, unplug the connector from the vvt solenoid that is on the engine and plug it in the spare vvt solenoid, that you can then tuck in somewhere. This way, you get rid of the noise and you also avoid having an engine management light on the instrument cluster.

Don't think there is one. I can get the instructions from the Volvo VIDA software and upload them

Hi gatos. Thanks for your reply. If you can simply by-pass the VVt,this begs the question, what is its purpose? Will it affect performance? I'm intrigued by your "cheeky" solution. Would it need to be a working solenoid. Would shorting out the terminals on the solenoid connector have the same effect? Is there room under the bonnet to tuck away a spare solenoid? Incidentally I thought the V40 had VVT on the exhaust cam only, but there are inlet solenoids for sale on E-bay. Any views on that? Thanks for your help.
