Windscreen:~

"Would you be willing to share how much it cost you, just so I have a rough figure to budget for?"

I done it through my insurance company- so the excess is £75:00.
This is the all in cost including the full set of clips (Blue tinted top band) and now bonded as mentioned.
Keep up the good work- you certainly picked a project to hone your skills!
Regards Bob.

Thanks Bob. I think I'll have to end up paying the full price for a screen install as I'm in a bit of a chicken and egg situation - most insurers won't cover a screen if the car has no MOT, and yet I'm not going to get an MOT without a windscreen. (Unless I'm mistaken on either point).

It may be worth checking out with the Insurers:~
My car has been on S.O.R.N for a couple of months now whilst I carried out some jobs to include the screen- I never mentioned that the MOT had also run out (not purposely- just never thought it was required) they never asked just referred me direct to the screen company and we sorted the details between us.
Good Luck & regards Bob.

In line with what Bob said, i was in a similar position myself many moons ago. Car had been off the road and therefore uninsured due to various repair/refurb and other works i was carrying out on it and a few days before insuring it, a huge crack appeared in the screen.
I insured it anyway and waited a couple of days then put in a claim for a new screen. Windscreen company came out, fitted it and i took it for MoT the next day.

The ironic part was i had to use it the day after and picked up a chip in the new screen almost exactly where the original screen had a chip that caused the crack.
Bought one of those screen chip repair kits (clear resin, syringe etc) and filled the chip. That was 12+ years ago and the screen is still ok.

The big question for you is did the original screen come out in one piece, even if it was cracked or chipped? If so and you know of a local company that is happy to do insurance work, have a chat with them, they may be able to put through a chip repair but reinstall it (it's a repair of sorts after all) or simply invoice the insurers for fitting a new screen and either way, you've saved them half a job by removing it.

Good info on many points. I don't have anything to lose by trying the insurance route!

Your average insurance job screen fitter will probably love this job. No horrible old screen to remove, no seal to scrape out, just a nice clean freshly epoxied surface to blob the polyurethane on.

The old screen is trashed. I had grand plans of getting it out unscathed that lasted a whole five seconds!

You've got it! One other thing to watch is that some insurance companies charge say £60 for the excess on the glass through their nominated screen company but more (say £80) through a different company - also make sure your local company that does the work is able to invoice your insurers and that the insurers are able to pay them.

Sounds ridiculous but i have heard of people who have been on a touring holiday of the UK and had a screen go, phoned their insurers to be told their nominated company has a 3-week wait for the screen, found a local one that has one in stock, got it all sorted, local company invoices the insurers (as they have previously in similar situations) only to be told the insurers no longer accept invoices from them and then all hell breaks loose.

All down to bean-counters who look at transaction histories and see they've only had 29 invoices from this small company in 10 years and decided to remove them from the payees list to "streamline their spreadsheets" or some such excuse.

As for the hope of getting a screen out intact, some years back i bought a car as a breaker and because the screens appeared intact, bought some windscreen removal tools. When i went to try removing the screens, i discovered someone had previously had a go and damaged the screens on the corners so that as soon as i tried with the correct tool, the screens crumbled around the corners. As the remains of the shell was destined for scrap i didn't go further but left the tools with my mate whose driveway the car was sat in. He tried and ended up turning one screen into a mosaic!

Sold the tools some time later on ebay to cut my losses!

Will you use the old type rubber seal (with the clips and chrome surround) or the later (wider) type. I can recommend the newer type (as fitted to the RB), it just depends whether you want to keep the car looking original or not.

It came with the large rubber surround and I'm happy to replace it with the same. As it stands there's not a bit of chrome on the car except the door handles so it would probably look out of place. Admittedly I prefer the chrome trim but I'd have to replace quite a lot of parts to get the full look.

This car is a glt, which had all black trim and the later style all black flush fitting windscreen surround from the factory- see the photo on the first page of the thread.

I prefer the later style and have that fitted to my car, although it had a chrome trim there originally I don’t think it looks out of place.

Cheers
