Unsure if I will go down the all season route... 70% of driving is 'down south' with the remainder in cumbria ( all year round).
The bridgestones look a good bet for AS as they appear to be slightly more 'summer' biased. Currently I have some 7 year old Pirelli scorpions on ( dont ask...) so I understand that almost anything will be better... Anyone running 'normal' ( I suppose summer ? tyres on their 90? all year without a second set for winter - cannot be ar$ed with messing abt changing) Costco have some Michelin's on offer ( £100 off 4) so am also considering these.. Michelin 255/50 R19 107 (Y) PILOT SPORT 4 SUV XL @ £152.38 (Incl VAT) each (Michelin R19+ Tyres: Buy 2 get £50 OFF; Buy 4 get £100 OFF) |

A quick hijack from me.
I swapped my 235/65 R17 Michelin Latitude Alpine winter wheels and tyre over today for my 235/60 R18 summer wheels and tyres. I now have a dilemma. The Alpines are dated 2012 and the tread is starting to strip, despite 3.5mm wear left. Probably time to replace the four. The wheels are really in excellent condition though. The summer tires are a split between a pair of Conti originals on 6mm, but one is starting to show cracking to the sidewalls. The other is fine. The fronts are a pair of budgets put on by the dealer on 7mm tread (he did refund me £350 at the time to leave the budgets on rather than replace for decent tyres). Do I cut my losses with the summer tyres (I want to replace the cracking Conti and the budgets anyway) and go for some all-season tyres. Or do I go for a summer set and a winter set as I already have both sets of wheels?

It depends a lot on how far down you run your tyres. I always change my winter/all seasons at 5mm as below that there is a massive loss of performance in the colder weather. The wear limit for a 3 peak marked tyre is 4mm, below that is it no longer rated as suitable for extreme conditions.
My usual method for the all seasons is to fit the new set in the autumn so you get the best of the tyre over the winter, then it runs down in summer and replace at 10-15k in the autumn again. What kind of conditions do you drive in? We encounter a lot of snow/ice so winter biased all season and winter tyres suit us best. If you only get occasional icy conditions, then something like a crossclimate might suit you better and you can run it lower than 4mm (although you lose some of the performance). In head to head testing I found the goodyear allseason to be as good as a winter tyre in most conditions. I was driving on un-ploughed roads than were 10" deep in the Tiguan and no hint of slipping. So I would recommend an all season and change it at 5mm if you want the winter performance. I've been running winter tyres since 2009 and noticed a huge difference in the performance of tyres over that time from my first Vredestein Snowtrac 2 up to the Continental TS860 (unbelievably good tyre in all weather) and all seasons now are far better than the top end winter tyres were 10 years ago. I would say the Goodyear Vector gen 2 are as good as the Goodyear Ultragrip 8 that I ran in 2011.

As an alternative to the Michelin CC or the Bridgestone A005Evo Ive found these from Avon - just released - and at c £120 a corner am seriously thinking of giving them a go...
https://www.avontyres.com/en-gb/tyres/avon-as7 They are all weather & have the 3 Peak symbol. |

Nice one Garethxc, I’ll keep a look out, as a confirmed Michelin CC user, a possible saving of at least £80 (collectively) not to be sniffed at. I’ll be due 2 new this backend.

In other news my Hankook Kingergy 4S are wearing really well, which is nice, as 'd seen reports to the contrary.

Good time to buy the Hankooks at the moment, incidentally - 235/50 R18 101V XLs for the XC70 are sub £100 which is a silly bargain IMHO (had to buy one because screw - but now repaired so I have a brand new spare )

Cross Climate 2's are on offer at KwikFit
Just ordered 4 from Kwik fit, who are doing a 15% off promotion, which includes fitting at home. Worked out cheaper than all the usual on-line sites
