Error codes 042/057/137/167, loss of power
Hi all,
As I might (somewhat) know what caused these errors to come up, I decided to start a new thread instead of just replying to an open one. A couple of days ago as I was vacuming the car after a very dusty camping holiday, I decided to get the air filter out, vacuum it and clear the housing of any dust. Without realising that the contact was still on in the II position, I foolishly disconnected the two big connectors to the ECU on top of the air filter (that is the ECU, right? With it's cooling fins?). After reconnecting everything, the car gave a "Engine system maintenance needed" message. While driving, it feels as if the turbo doesn't work. Accelerating works up to highway speed, but very slowly. The error codes I came up with (ignition in position II, holding the trip reset for a while,... ...) are 042,057,137 and 167. According to what I found elsewhere that is P0042 HO2S Heater Control Circuit (Bank 1 Sensor 3) P0057 HO2S Heater Control Circuit Low (Bank 2 Sensor 2) P0137 O2 Sensor Circuit Low Voltage (Bank 1 Sensor 2) P0167 O2 Sensor Heater Circuit Malfunction (Bank 2 Sensor 3) Could I have damaged some electronics by disconnecting these connectors? I have checked the fuses in the box next to the computer, these are all fine. Checked all the cables/connectors and haven't found any to have come loose. Any thoughts on how to proceed? Hmmm the first thing I would do is remove the negative lead from the battery for a few minutes, then connect with the key in position 2. This is only to protect the car when reconnecting as there is the chance of voltage spike ect. I take it everything was fine before this so doing the above might reset things for you. It's the simplist and free of course. If the car still does not want to play then you may need to have the car connected to vida dice the volvo software to reset the car. I am not sure if you will have damaged any of the electrics and hopefully not as they most certainly won't be cheap

Thanks for your reply. I forgot to mention that I had already tried to disconnect the negative for an hour or two. Didn't think that long would be necessary but did it after a five minute disconnect didn't help. Hadn't thought about reconnecting the battery with as much power consumption switched on to "absorb" a possible voltage spike. The error codes are of no help? Regards, Dieter |

arh right ok, To me the error codes are no help because that is where my experience ends with this sort of issue. I cant see there being a fault with the car mechanically if all was fine before which would point me more and more in the direction of having it plugged in at the dealers to find the fault and hopefully cure it with just a reset ect. That is what I would do, hopefully another member will be able to help you further and I hope you manage to sort the car out quickly and cheaply.

It sounds like you've just disconnected the MAF (mass airflow sensor) in which case it should just plug back in and all is good. The lack of turbo feeling is classic disconnected MAF behaviour.
What engine is it? Can you post a pic of the plug(s) you've disconnected please?

it sounds like its the euro 4 d5/2.4d which is what I was imagining. the ecu is bolted to the top of the air filter housing as daft as it sounds and a cover goes over the top of that. it has 2 big block connections.

I disconnected the whole piece, checked the sensor for visible obstructions. Disconnected the connector, cleaned up the contacts, reconnected it. It might be my imagination, but I think there's a little more power now in higher rpm's, but nowhere near what it should be like. The engine system managment service needed still comes up. Hey guys, had the engine service light come on and noticed a loss of power, shortly there after the whole engine started to die out and it seems to run without a turbo now, hope i didn't blow it...
