I see what you mean - they were listed separately for the 760 and 960 when i bought mine (after a failed pair of Stabilus tailgate struts failed just outside the warranty - they also cost more and took longer to arrive!) so it seems they're going the way of "one size fits all". Saw similar with the suspension springs and dampers on the 800 series Rover, one model is 20mm lower with shorter dampers but now most places list one set of springs and dampers for the range, including the diseasel variants which had stronger fronts to cope with the cast iron VM diesel lump.

Never a good sign when it goes one-size-fits-all.

See my comment about Stabilus above ^^^^^ not impressed by them! Before you ask, yes they were fitted the right way up!

Dave,

Thanks for the detailed and comprehensive advice, this is gold dust!

Looks like I've got plenty to keep me busy then. Just need some more hours in the day and we'll be sorted

Oops! That's embarrassing Mark! I just copy and pasted from my order history, obviously they've changed the links on that as well.

Sure they're not Stabilus, if they are i'll have even more egg on my face!

Maybe the pair that failed just out of warranty were SGS in that case and i'm confusing them. Finding the dead (one completely died, the other had some life so kept it in the shed for dire emergencies) pair will be tricky. Been a few years now (4+) and i've been asleep since!

@Laird Scooby, just need to clarify something...

Going to try a reverse flush today. Sounds silly but in the method you mention removal of top rad hose, then hose in to rad (once stat removed) but no mention of bottom hose off...I assume this needs to come off for the coolant to get out?

Plus did you have a recommendation for EG coolant?

Thank you again

Russ

Remove the thermostat and refit the housing. Remove the top hose from the radiator and insert a garden hose (snug fit if it has a Hozelock style fitting on the end) and turn on, it will reverse flush the system. Leave it running for about 30 minutes or if it runs clear before that, another 5-10 minutes after running clear. The flushing water will come out of the stub on the top of the radiator.

Drain the majority of the water now in the system by removing the bottom hose from the rad then refit. Add 5L of concetrated antifreeze, fit a new 'stat and seal (use silicone grease on the rubber seal both in the groove inside for the 'stat and on the outside) cleaning the lands in the housings of any debris/corrosion to help with getting a good seal, refit the top hose to the rad and top up via the expansion tank with water and fit the cap. Start engine and run up to temperature, checking for leaks. Leave overnight to cool and check the level next morning before starting. Top up with water to the MIN mark on the tank if needed, refitting the cap tightly.
You missed a few bits in my original method Russ - i've highlighted them and also added a comment as to how the water escapes during the flushing process - note this is a reverse flush to help remove sediment that would block things in the normal direction of flow.

Just to be clear, use the G48 concentrated when you refill, not before using the flushing agent! Reading it back, i can see there could be scope for confusing that!

Hope that clarifies everything!
