Volvo are going to cover the cost to replace the cooler. Normally it can take up to 48 hours for them to make a decision. But a second call to them this afternoon seemed to speed it up. Although it was too late for the dealer to fix it needs to go back on the 14th.

Just cost the diagnostic fee.

Hi, i have the exact same issue as yours - Would you mind sharing the contact information you used to get hold of the Goodwill dept?

Hey everyone, like most people I'm sure, I've joined this forum because i have a problem with my car.

I honestly have read through most of this thread now and it's genuinely been invaluable in it's information, you're a good bunch. That's why i'm sorry to bring up some already discussed points, but i'm nervous and need some reassurance.

I have a Volvo V60 D4 2014 - 126,000 miles - FSH but not all Volvo.

Started getting the engine management light come on and sometimes go off of its own accord at the beginning of August. and then during a drive back from Devon to Milton Keynes the dreaded tortoise came up on the dash. This would clear with every time i restarted the engine and would stay off for an indeterminable amount of time before coming back on again. the frequency this is happening has increased by the day.

I took it to a garage who read off the P04d9 code and reset it - only for it to come back again obviously. He said that he monitored the EGR valve during running and said that it performed normally.

When the limp mode is off the car runs like a dream and idles normally.

Volvo have my in on September 24th to carry out the 3 recalls that i've ignored since last year and asked me how the car was otherwise. I told them and they instantly said cooler, but i'm worried that i won't be able to afford the repair at the moment. Could i get your guys honest opinion about how i should deal with this - please note i know i should've seen Volvo with previous services, it's not usually my style to go to an independent, but what's done is done.

Would appreciate any feedback or advice.

Just under a year ago, after servicing my V70 D4 (with the 4-cylinder VEA engine), my Volvo specialist warned me that my EGR cooler was blocked, and quoted me for supplying and fitting a replacement.

The car was on 131,000 miles.

At the same time, my car was also due for the ECM software upgrade recall, so in it went to Volvo Maidenhead, who then replaced the EGR cooler under a goodwill arrangement with Volvo.

So... in the end, Volvo paid for it.

Whether that would happen in September 2021 or if I'd gone to another Volvo dealer instead I don't know.

What I can say is that the right dealer will probably fight your corner for you, and you shouldn't have to go to Volvo yourself.

Thanks for the advice - I guess i should just ask the question once the diagnosis has been officially made.

Would you say it was a good idea to play this submissively as opposed to going in trying to make demands?

Best to be nice. It's the dealer who makes the case out to Volvo UK for goodwill, my chosen dealer has a direct link where goodwill contributions for established common faults (such as the EGR cooler) can be approved by a computer system in real time after a few questions have been answered... mileage/age/service history/where it was bought from/etc.. I imagine all dealers to have such a facility.

I got 100% goodwill contribution for the EGR cooler replacement. They even had the replacement waiting on a shelf.

Thanks a lot, i'll hope for the best but kind of expect the worse.

Do you (or anyone else) have any idea on the cost of a replacement EGR cooler if i do have to foot the bill?

Last October, I was quoted £351.50 + one hour of labour + VAT.

Zebster I have been thinking to have a go at that as my MIL light is on again (egr dtcs). I was wondering if using an ultrasonics bath would do the trick on cleaning the cooler.
