The longer a car is on the road, the more likely that is to be the case

That's the point.. Them prices no longer are viable for the age of the xc90s we are talking about here.

The £2000 extra we got on the trade in, was to the penny almost what we'd paid on servicing over 8 years.

So, on balance, we serviced our car at a dealer, with genuine Volvo parts, and a lifetime warranty on the parts, for free.

Have a service a a dealer and you get a years free Volvo branded RAC cover. Because it was dealer serviced Volvo also gave us 8 years of RAC membership for free, which is roughly £1000 on its own at about £130 a year for similar cover.

If I'd taken it elsewhere for servicing we'd have got £2000 less, and still had to bear the cost of the servicing on top of that, and had pay £1000 for our own breakdown cover over 8 years on top of that, so either way we're very, very much quids in.

Just because theyre knocking on a bit doesn't make them any cheaper to maintain or repair. Garages and parts suppliers don't take pity on us because our old buses are knocking on a bit. If you can't stomach the prospect of a big bill one day then a 2.2 tonne, highly complex, expensive-when-new SUV is not the car for you, regardless of the badge on the grille. No one wants a big bill, and I have sympathy with anyone who gets one, but feigning indignance at it is completely disingenuous.

And then theres the side issue. This forum is littered with stories of folk who've tried to fix their Volvo on the cheap at a local independent. Having spent loads of money and being no closer to a resolution, they give in and have to pay a dealer. I'm an ex X5 and RX300h owner and can confirm that the BMW and Lexus forums have plenty of similar tales of people who'd spent a fortune trying to save money.

That’s assuming you believe the salesman when he says they’re giving you £2k extra purely because of the service history, there’s also what £250ks worth of Volvo cars and maintenance costs in your family so they’re going to be keen to keep you buying, if you buying some where else and trading in would it be worth 2k extra, maybe maybe not, so it may well work out well for you but that’s not to say it would be true for everyone. The belt changes I just “helped” my dad do on our car cost me £315 in parts, what would Volvo charge? North of £1000 I’m guessing, would our car be worth £700 more with a reciept from Volvo saying they did it? And I also don’t see where the logic is that any quality mechanic is likely to not be able to do as good of a job as a Volvo mechanic

For your amusement, the last time I took my car to a main dealer for diagnostics they said, and I quote, "you probably don't want us to fix this...". Given that they were quoting towards £2000 for the high pressure diesel pump which Bosch (the OE) will supply for £600, and that the HP pump was the tip of the iceberg, they were probably right! I appreciated their honesty, actually, and found the service to be highly professional. I duly fixed it myself. I had mentioned to them that I have a 2-post ramp, so possibly not their typical customer...

Regarding the swirl flap fix, I can probably explain that one. Volvo won't re-use the (very expensive - circa £500 for both sets, IIRC) high pressure fuel pipes, which have to be removed in order to replace the swirl flap rod (i.e. the part with the flaps themselves on). In fairness, the seats on the pipes can be damaged to the point that they leak (and cannot be made to seal), but for my money the sensible approach is to replace them if you can't get them to seal, not every time. I get why they do it (same reason they won't re-shim a AC compressor clutch or de-carbon a turbo turbine housing), but it seems wasteful (not least of the customer's money) to me.

Oh...and the reason I'm here....everyone keep it cordial, please. No need for any unnecessary antagonising, on either side.

cheers

James
