Did a search but didn't find the answer:
I have a 164 with vented discs, 4 cylinder calipers. Would a set from a 240 slip in as replacements? If not, how hard is it to get seals and recondition the existing ones? Caliper on nsf is heating up and seizing on the disc. Pads are nearly worn out and replacing them might sort out the problem (less travel for the pistons) but still, would like to have the calipers in good condition. Fran |

Classicswede answered the very same question in July - the answer was no!
If your brakes are ATE (as they are on my 164s) I was informed only last week that Pastparts from Bury St Edmonds have front caliper ATE brake overhaul kits, so I'm about to order an axles worth. However, my book advises that some cars have good old Girling systems - I wish mine did! Paul |

Thanks for that!! Couldn't find it on search for some reason.
Anyway, now to check out reconditioning kits. Fran |

How can you tell whether you have ATE or Girling brakes?

If they are ATE they will have the ATE logo in the casting of the calipers (I know that mine did on my 1800ES). I don't know about Girling, but I guess if it doesn't say ATE on them assume they are Girling?

Girling usualy have a big G on them.
Sticking calipers are not normaly seals but the pistons that are the problems. I would suggest sending the pair off for refurb rather than messing about with seals as a tempory only fix. A full recon will last well for you. You could try a set off SS pistons from Klick but they are expensive. |

You can tell by the pad pins. ATE pins are knocked in and retained by a sprung collar. Girling pads are straight all the way along their length and are retained by an R clip.

Thanks 940 Turbo for the simple answer on the different types of caliper, I have usually felt a prat when put on the spot at the Motor Factors when asking for service kits etc.
