Default 2005 V50 intermittent limp mode

Can anyone please advise on what to check?
We have a 55 plate V50 2.0D manual that occasionally seems to go into 'limp mode' by having limited revs available. Simply turning off the ignition and restarting clears the problem. This has happened 4 times in the last 2 weeks and the car is in daily use.
There are no error messages on the display other than 'Engine System Service Required' that's will not clear, even by connecting a code read/reset box.
Sorry if this sounds a bit dim, but we're not that knowledgeable about this vehicle as we have only recently purchased privately.
Thanks in advance.

The engine service light coming on and the car going into limp mode would I expect throw a fault code up in the ECU, mine did when i had a bad temp sensor on the DPF, I read and cleared my codes with a small basic Autech code reader and also a Bluetooth ODB11 dongle and the torque app on Android, both inexpensive options. If you can get the codes someone will no doube be able to assist

If it's going into limp home mode, there will be an error code logged in the system. You need to get it plugged into some appropriate diagnostics to read the code, it may tell you exactly what's wrong. Often it could just be a simple sensor fault, but until you know what the codes are - any actions are guess work.

Thanks again to those who have replied. I have connected a basic code reader and have the following codes (and what the box tells me they mean).
ECM 2584 & 2585 (Additive Dosing Module), ECM 242F (Particle Trap), ECM 0380 (Glow Plug Relay), ECM 2452 (Particle Trap Pressure Sensor), ECM C301 (Nothing listed for this code), CCM 0040 (Air Quality Sensor), CEM 8F22 (Wiper Motor Module). I should point out that all the codes can be reset with the basic code reader and stay off until the engine is started again, except for CCM 0040 (Air Quality Sensor) which remains. The car is also running very well, with no signs of error apart from the occasional drop into limp mode (see original posting).
Again I respectfully ask for advice on what course of action to take now I have these codes?
Kind regards
Rod B

Hi
On the surface it looks like Eolys additive tank levels and DPF problem caused by lack of Eolys.
Has the Eolys been topped up and counter reset?

The Eolys tank should be topped up every 37.5k miles and the counter reset and the DPF changed @ 75K(some last up to 120-150K, but Volvo say to change at 75k)

Mine has the glow plug relay fault all the time and causes no problems.

Others might have other ideas but I would probably start with checking the Eolys level and counter reading

First thing I'd do is clean the connections on the CEM.
Under the glove box, just nicely placed for passengers to kick, I used to be plagued with limp mode on my 55 2.0d S40, which would clear with no messages after turning the key off and back on.
Takes half an hour and free! (Well a bit of sand paper)
