After 9500km of mixed cross city driving finally managed to take the XC60 on an good 3 hour 100km/h run round the Bay today. Topped up the car before starting, 2 adults and 2 kids and reset the avg consumption meter. Got 6.6 litres per 100km over a trip of 230km of mainly freeway driving.

Well I have to report that my gauge does appear to be optimistic - around 6% based on my numbers over 924 miles. Gauge average would be 43.7 vs a calculated 41.1mpg.

I am still pleased with these figures but I will now be back to "more normal" motoring so will expect to see the mpg drop over the coming weeks due to lots of cold starts and a 5 mile daily commute.

Just got back from a country trip over the long weekend; about 900 kms at about 6.8 litres per 100 km, measured at refill. A few hills and highway at 110 kph most of the way. An occasional spurt to 140 kph for overtaking.

I can not recall another car that I have owned as frugal. For the past 20 years the gas guzzler 4WDs I had have used more than double.

All good feedback and poll results thus far seem to suggest its an excellent car with vew unhappy owners.

Know what you mean about being frugal. When cruising along with the cruise control on at a steady 70 mph the instantaneous mpg hovers around the 40 mark, need to overtake, give it some beans it drops rapidly but before you know it your past and it settles back in nicely. It's good to know the power is there whe you need it though eh.

Incidently I find the optimum flat road speed for fuel ecomony on the D5 manual is 73mph. Anything above and below this appears to reduce the ecomony IMO. I thought 56 mph used to be the "golden" speed for economy? Things must have moved on....
