My 740 2.3 n/a does just fine towing mine (1300KGS) . Good amount of power, and cruises nicely once on the motorway.

Obviously for £3,500 you can get more for your money.

Default Tug

My 745 GLT 16V is fair - but the torque is really too high up the rev range.

I suspect the same is true of all the turbos.

A good RWD tug is better than a good FWD tug.

Manual tows better than auto - it's too easy to boil the fluid in an autobox (unless you fit a cooler). I once got the transmission tunnel on a 245GLT so hot that you could not touch the carpet over it!

I'd say a white block manual 760 or 960 would be the best.

Don't touch the V6 - the engines break!

i would go for a 960 non turbo with auto box best going 1996 or newer then u will have the anti slip and the 3 litre is ample for the van i haved tov caravans for years and found the 9 to be the best for power 10 out of 10 comfort 10 out of 10 reliabilety 9 out of 10 and i saved the best to last the 9 is rear drive u dont get as much trouble as u do with the v70/s70 being that it has front drive and not rear u can lose traction when coming of and on feilds my advice is stick with a 9

Default Towbar Query

Hi, can you give me any information about which towbar you have fitted to your 940 2.3 LPT ? Does it have the rear bumper trim removed? Does it have the rear towing eye (LHS) fitted still and what about the electrics, are they fitted into a volvo kit? If so, where is it situated? Any help at all most greatfully received! Nick

When fitting the tow bar to the 940 it is advised that the bumper trim should be removed.
You could get away with doing a cut-out - BUT - the bar is only a couple of millimetres from the colour coded part so you need to be careful..

The tow eye will be gone as that is bolted into two of the holes that the tow bar uses to fix to the car.
No more tow eye. But with a tow bar, who needs the tow eye???

Ive been touring for years and have used many cars
i,ve got a 22' caravan and used to tow it with a 2.8 td lwb shogun
untill i tried a TDI 850 i,ve had 3 since and a V70 tdi and you just cant beat them...they run rings around the shogun
Dont believe all you here about running costs ..all 4 of mine did 35mpg with the van on the back and cheap to service.
one good bit of advice is buy one with cruise control
hope this helps
