Exclamation Head Gasket 740 GL 1990.

What is involved in changing the head gasket on my Volvo, could it be done by a home mechanic ( me ) ?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Yes. It's not difficult if you have a bit of experience. It's worth having the head skimmed before you refit it. You may as well change the cambelt while you are doing it, as you have to take it off.

Get a haynes manual for the torque specs and have a read through. You'll get an idea if it's something you want to try yourself.

You'll need a torque wrench for when you put it all back together, and a puller to get the crank pully off (only if you're going to change the cambelt). Other than that normal hand tools are all you'll need.

Good luck,

Jim.
