Urgently need help explaining Volvo's instructions!!!
Hi, 940 2.3 Celebration Auto Estate 1988
Just fitted a Bosal swan neck tow bar (because offer 75kg nose weight and 1900kg overall) from Towequip for £95 +carriage but fitted Volvo's electrics kit (£106 + 13 pin to two seven pin adapter £42 with discount!) Fitting instructions are clear and diagrams are reasonable. Colour code for each wire is given with location point in each connector which is also clearly identified. However the additional kits which I purchased (1) to upgrade the indicator relay and (2) to disconnect the rear fogs when towing are another story. I have also ordered the turn signal light for the dash to confirm trailer/caravan indicators are working, but this hasn't turned up yet. I have successfully rewired my old caravan but these have me stumped ! I dont want to make any guesses and do harm and I am off on holiday 26 August! Indicator Light Kit (1) Remove drivers side insulation panel (below steering wheel) cigar lighter and cover plate and compartment. Withdraw ECM and remove relay. Turn ECM over. Route yellow/red (Y/R) (Y/R) cable along the existing cable harness and up to the combined intrument. Connect the yellow/red cable to socket C for the flasher relay. Install the new relay. 1995 - Cars with amplifier installed; Remove the connector and undo the screws, let the amplifier hang down. Remove the 14 pin connector from the combined instrument. Separate the connector halves and connect the yellow/red (Y/R) cable to position 6. Reinstall amplifier and the connector in the combined instrument. esentially job now done. Diagram at this point is useless I have not made the (yellow/red) cable connection as it appears to be present already, though I have not confirmed it is rooted to the 14 pin combined instrument connector because there is very little room to get ones hand in behind it. Question: 1 What change in behaviour will I see when using indicators? I get single green indicator signal lamp on once in combined instrument, then indicator direction lamp flashes normally to show direction of signal. Does anyone know if this is right please? 2. Is the amp like the previous ones in 200/700 series with aluminum heatsink case about 5 inches long? I am assuming this change of relay is to cope with greater load because of caravan flashers. Rear Fog Light Relay Locate 10-pin tow bar connector. Position relay in suitable position. Disconnect cable from terminal 2 in 10-pin connector and tape it to the cable harness. It is not clear from either diagram or instructions if this means the pug on the tow bar side or the plug on the car loom which it connects with Cut down blue (BL) cable from the relay and install cable terminal. Connect to terminal 2 in the connector.Next instructions require that you identfy your car as eitherA) 945 1993-, 965 1992-94, or (B) 944 1993-, 964 1993-94 Which is mine? I think it is 945 1993- Then states for (A) Disconnect cable connected to top rear light. Cut down lilac/white (VO/W) cable, install cable terminal and receptacle housing, connect to cable from rear light. Cut down green/white (GN/W) cable, install cable terminal and recptacle housing, connect to top rear light terminal. On mine top light (RHS) has one black cable and one lilac/white (VO/W) which is double. If someone can give me their views on which side of 10-pin plug Volvo mean I would be immensely greatful! |

Solution yo unclear instructions
It appears that late models did indeed have the yellow/red cable, between ECM and combined instrument, factory fitted, so all that is necessary is to upgrade flasher relay.
Cable 2 is in the tow bar side of the 10-pin plug. It is tied back and unused. It's place taken by the blue cable. The violet/white cable is removed from the rear right fog light and connected to the relay cable of the same colour. The green/white cable is connected to the fog light. |
