Could anyone guide me on V70 xenon headlamp problems please?
Hi all, first post so please be gentle!
I have recently acquired a V70 on an 05 plate, put it through an MoT and it's failed, not too badly but the main one giving me issues is the beam pattern failure. I've polished up the lenses and appear to have a better beam pattern but not one I'm sure would pass. So reading that a D2R bulb partially formed a beam pattern I thought I'd try two new bulbs. I appear to have got myself into a bit of a pickle, unless these are just a PITA anyway?! The long story short is the bulb on the O/S that had the best beam pattern of the lot was a D2S and the headlamp on the N/S now only works intermittently. I've swapped the igniter pack from the OSF with it's D2S bulb into the NSF headlamp and it doesn't light up. Moving the whole OSF headlamp to the NSF everything works normally. On removing both headlamps the NSF smelt of burning and some water came out the bottom, so the ballast pack is currently sat in the airing cupboard. My question is, that OSF headlamp shouldn't have a D2S should it? Have Volvo ever made a V70 headlamp for an 05 that took a D2S? I've seen both have different notches but they both seem to fit as well as each other? The part numbers are 30784256 for the OS and 30698850 for the NS. Also has anyone ever baked the headlamp to get the front lenses off to clean them? Is anyone selling a decent pair of headlamps for a reasonable price as the Volvo was supposed to be a project but my other car has now bitten the dust so I'm without a car at the moment. |

I refurbish headlights a lot.. never bake them.
Cut the lens with an angle grinder, remove the remaining parts from the lens by hand. Install new plastic lens with sealant. |

Download the V70 MY2005 user manual and check your bulbs on page 244 Both your headlamps should be the same not different numbers.

There are 2 versions of the Bi Xenon bulb which is why the notches are different
One is the D2R WHICH YOU SHOULD HAVE (Bi Xenon is fixed headlamps dont move when you go around corners) and the other is a D1S which is for an ACTIVE Bi Xenon which moves the beam when you steer around corners) You can get these at the website below (see MARUTA/ MTEC/ BI XENON BULBS.) Your main beam (the flasher bulb on steering wheel arm) is a 65w H9 (4750K COSMIC BLUE) GoTo https://www.hids-direct.co.uk for these and select MARUTA/ MTEC HALOGEN BULBS colour closest match is COSMIC BLUE (see their colour beam match for reference is a nice crisp white not blue). Lastly if you want good colour match on front change your fog lamps ( you will have 55wH1 or 55wH3 DONT GET 100W ONES) check before purchase. They give 4750k light) again at the above site under MARUTA MTEC HALOGEN BULBS Cosmic Blue. Excellent quality bulbs and prices. Hope this helps. L8TRS

I have a similar issue, due to drl lighting, the lenses are slightly melted and crazed from the inside.. so no amount of polishing would fix that.. I have used vida to turn off the DRLs so “hopefully” they won’t get any worse as they just scraped thru the last mot
Most second hand units will have the same issue to varying extent, and good ones are rare as rockin horse. As said above best options are really new units££££, or replace the lenses. Vparts Sweden sell replacement lenses- but not sure if they are shipping to the UK at the moment (thanks brexit) |
