Absolutely fascinating!! Rather sad to think that there are so few examples left for certain models- NO 265DL autos left at all!!
As DK1 says, would be interested how many were left in N.Ireland- there seems to be so few and they are highly priced- an '88 240GL was advertised for a £1000 at xmas- and it sold!! chris

It could be that where a factory sunroof was specified but would not have been standard it got the S/R. I don't know about the 300 series, but on the 240 the glass sunroof was a dealer fitted accessory. AFAIK where specified the DFA's would be put in the car as it left the factory for fitting by the dealer. Also the cylinder capacity shows the code 'P1' beside it (all the engine related info has 'P' designations - Power P2, type of fuel P3, engine number P5). As the object of the exercise is to extract information from DVLA I intend to ask what the s/r stands for. Meanwhile we could run a competition to see who can come up with the most plausible answer, given that it took over 6 weeks to get the reply last year.

I've been through my documents and came across an HPI check I did on my 245 before purchasing it and thought it might stand for status / report, then studied the actual status report a bit more; could s/r possibly stand for stolen / recovered?

I'm almost entirely certain it stands for sunroof. My car is listed as a "360 GLE S/R" - it's part of the model designation. Other 300s I have seen without a sunroof are missing this tag. What else could it reasonably stand for?

Are you sure about estates not having a factory sunroof - I remember seeing a number of 245GLTs with steel sliding roofs in Edinburgh in the late 1980s, and metallic gold 245GLE in Glasgow with one on a number of occasions? The only aftermarket steel sliding roofs I know of (other than cassette types that sat on top on the roof) were by Golde and I saw ones on a Triumph 2000 and a 5-speed VX4/90.

My old man had a 244 DL estate followed by a 240 DL estate
in both instances he had aftermarket sunroof's fitted - Murray Volvo in Edinburgh in the 1970's and early 80's did a fair old trade in fitting them to 240's |

I tried to buy a 240 estate in 1989 / 90 with a factory sunroof, after a bit of questioning as to why I couldn't specify sunroof on the order I was told:
there was no 240 estate bodyshell produced with a sunroof opening, and any 240 estate sunroofs fitted by Volvo were glass, and dealer fitted. There are aftermarket sunroofs which use the panel cut from the roof (so look like the metal 'factory' fit) but Volvo didn't offer them as an accessory - of course it's possible a Volvo dealer would fit non-volvo parts if asked, but it might have been a warranty issue. http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/attach...1&d=1179754835 That's the 89 model year price list - on it you will see that sunroofs are standard on the GLT SALOON only, or can be specified as an option on the GL SALOON only. yeah - the sunroofs fitted by Murray were pretty basic affairs - literally tinited windows that could only be tilt opened at the back - nothing like the GLT metal slide opening one.
sorry - by aftermarket I meant that they fitted the volvo sunroof at the dealer ater the car had been sold - not that they were made by a 3rd party. |
