I see you are in Glasgow. Not sure how helpful this is, but I got the transmission fluid changed in my Jaguar XJR by the independent Prestige Jaguar. The owner Dougie is very handy. |

Gibbons Method?
Hi Guys,
Er..., could some kind soul please explain what is meant by "the Gibbons Method" when draining, flushing, and refilling an auto box? I've noticed that mine on slow speed/low revs now makes a sound that it never used to. So I'm thinking is it time for flushing out/refilling? Many thanks in anticipation. Regards, Rob.

Well I've got a diagnostic !! 3rd gear is not engaging and MACKIEs suspect the top bolt (3rd gear band holder) has been used to fill gear box !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! There are signs of ATF around the bolt. AND the box needed 1.5 litres of ATF to top it up !!!!!!!!!! This has cost me £98 to find this out plus the fuel to get to Glasgow and back. £240 for the ATF, £415 for labour and the rest of the job so to date I am down about £800 for what was ostensibly an MOT, front disc/pad change, 2 tyres and an ATF flush and my car is KNACKERED !!!!!!!!!!
I am staying at home at the moment and going to see the guy WOT DONE IT tomorrow because I will probably be less liable to lose it with him by then. MACKIES want £2700 to remove/rebuild and reinstall gearbox, gulp ! Wife won't have any of that so am thinking of asking(getting) HIM WOT DONE IT to remove box and refit it for free and send it to MACKIES to get it fixed and I'll pay for the MACKIES bit. BUT maybe I'll think differently tomorrow and not want to pay anything ! |

Have a google around and a search on here, there's a very simple (but fiddly) way of getting that band back into alignment. Don't let anyone tell you the whole box needs removed and rebuilt, it doesn't! That band can be manoeuvred into place again with the box still in the car.
None of this should be your problem, rather the morons who f-cked it up should either put it right themselves or pay to have it sorted out. Chris...

Found the relevant post re the in situ fix. Went to see HIM wot done it and to his credit he held is hands up and said mea culpa. So car is into him on Monday when he is going to do the in situ fix, he'll need far more patience than I could ever muster to do it but I've seen him fiddle with something for a long time and get the job done so I have every faith that he can do it.

It is definitely far to fiddly for me (total lack of patience with that sort of thing) but for the man wots doing it I think he knows that if he can get it done then he has got himself out of a hole so he has a lot of incentive.
