Default CV Joint replacement

As above, is this a doable job for a novice or am i safer getting a pro to do it?

It would depend how competent you are and what sort of tools you have. The main problem is that the drive shaft nut and getting the drive shaft out of the hub. There has been some horror stories on here about changing CV boots and the joints themselves.
I had to change the boots a couple of years ago, following the Haynes manual i managed to do one side but i simply couldn't get the half shaft out of the hub. I had to take it to a local garage to finish the job.

Couple of things to note:

Volvo will sell you a boot kit but will not sell the outer CV joint. They only sell complete driveshafts on an exchange basis and you will be £500+ out of pocket by the time the work has been done on the car.

While I do the vast majority of the work on my car myself CV joints is one job I send it to the garage as it can be a PITA and a horrible job.

The last time I got a CV joint from ECP and sent it to the garage. Turns out the part was wrong (despite being labelled as correct on the box). Now I would have wasted at least 1/4 of my weekend getting to that point (finding out then having to put the car back together) whereas the garage just ordered the correct part in and fixed it with little loss of time, all for £110.

£110 vs 1/4 of my weekend. Sorry but there's no competition there for me for that particular job.

just done my outer joint yesterday.bought from e-bay for £40/50 delivered and was fitted within 30mins,but im handy with spanners but tbh would be easy enough if your not too handy either if im honest.best to pop whole shaft out of box as much simpler to fit new joint when sitting in a vice

snedboy how do you get the driveshaft out the box? Changed mine 2yrs ago with a friend but the joint is stuffed already so needs to be replaced once again. Last time I had the car sat there in bits for 2days as the wrong part was delivered, the splines are different which is a pain in the butt. How can you make sure to get the right part in the first place. Was gutted when Rufe told me volvo only replace the whole shaft at almost £300. So aftermarket £50 part it is.

after i took bottom ball joint off,the drop link and loosened the hub bolt i chapped the shaft out of hub then pulled brake disc to side and pulled hard and fast on the whole shaft and it popped out no probs, but sometimes you need to wedge the shaft at gearbox end a bit before it pops out
