Default Suspected Clutch Release Bearing

A few months ago, probably about the time that the weather got colder my car started to develop a strange noise.

When I go to pull away I get a screech / groan kind of noise. This noise only happens when pulling away slowly and it is literally as the clutch starts to engage. I can record the noise to mp3 and upload it if anyone thinks that would help (suggestions of where to upload an audio file to would be appreciated)

I have looked through previous posts about the subject and suspect it to be the clutch release bearing. Does this sound right to those of you that are more mechanically minded?

If so what are your opinions on:
1 waiting till it goes? - what are the potential problems that this could cause?
2 Relpacing it along with the clutch and probably a couple other bits whilst there? - Please don't say do this, I might cry!
3 Trying to lubricate it through the grommet that the hydraulic pipe goes through? - Clifford Pope aparently has had luck with this, but on a 240 http://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showth...clutch+bearing

I have a '99 S70 NA B5254S M56 Gearbox. I have one of these new fangled clutch slave cylinders and release bearings all in one.

Thanks to anyone that got to the end of this epic post, I would really appreciate your opinions and suggestions.

My 850 has the same thing, I havent bothered with it cos she still drives fine, my clutch has 141k on it so im just waiting for the whole thing to go eventually. Personally I wouldn't bother aslong as it still works ok, but then I have a miserable public sector salary and the cars only worth about 500 quid, lol

Warm Regards
Rob

Cheers for the advise Rob, how long has yours been making a noise for and is it getting any worse? Incedentially mine passed 141,000 yesterday!

Anyone else got any thoughts?

Thanks again,

Kyle

Does your car sit around unused for lengths of time? 'Cos its maybe just the friction plate making the noise which usually can be cured by slipping the clutch a bit to take the shine off it.

Its very difficult to describe noises. I work in a dealership and its so funny how customers like to describe noises! Like 'i have a bobbling noise'!! Anyway hope its nothing serious

Agree that it's very tough to diagnose noises over the internet lol. However, given what you've said, I suspect that one of the springs on the clutch plate has broken as opposed to a worn out release bearing (though at your mileage it is probably nearing its end as well if it's the original). As long as the clutch isn't slipping and you don't mind the noise it should operate normally with the broken spring.

Ive done about 10k in the car and the noise and feel has always been the same, so ive lived with it, its only really noticeable when its cold, she makes plenty of other interesting noises anyway, lol, The previous owner was a really relaxed driver, so im hoping its gonna last me for a fair bit.

Regards
Rob

I have done 20k on mine since I got it, and that same noise has been there. Think its release bearing. Also done 141k.

Thanks soo much for the replies. I've only just had time to read them as i've been a bit busy at work and tinternet at home is almost useless.

Maybe this noise should be renamed the 141k squeel!

ocean 238 - I like the sound of it still continuing for 30k with me doing nothing hope i am as lucky as you.

zaskar - The car is driven at least 30 miles per day 7 days per week, but I have been very gentle to my clutch as i know it is old and I really cant be bothered to change it and don't want to pay someone else to do it. would this make the plates "shiney"?

I know it's almost impossible to diagnose the noise without hearing it, but i intend to post it for anyone to have a listen, just got to figure out how to do that first.

Thanks again, It's so nice to have a group of people as friendly and helpful as you guys for opinions and suggestions.
