If not, you need to select P to switch off.

This is for the non physical shifter of course.
Thanks, I will explore that. Ive only had the car less than a fortnight. As a matter of course, I always have the Auto hand brake selected. I now recollect,as my driveway is on a slight incline, and on this particular occasion, I turned Auto handbrake off to give me close control when inching up to the garage door. Then, when I turned the dial, the engine remained on. I dont recall exactly what it was I did to turn it off.

I think you have your answer then.

I have auto handbrake switched off on my 2021 B5P MHEV and I'm pretty confident I just pull up and turn the car off without hitting P or applying the handbrake. I'll do a test when I go out later.

Mine is one of the last sensus models, is this a difference between software systems?

Doubt that its Software but of course Volvo introduced several changes coincidental to the software change. So for example do you have a drive mode selector button?

On the Sensus cars there is a setting in the menu My Car → Auto Activation of the Handbrake, when the car is switched off. I don't know if this is available on the newer cars.

Ironically my phone would not connect. So I went out and started the car but it would not let me switch it off, until I put the car into P. Why I did not put into P as I normally do is due to having…

a brain fart. 🤣

I conducted my scientific test on the commute to the station this morning; I just switch off with the car (XC90 B5P MHEV but a 2021 sensus version) in D and the car sorts everything else out for me.

My 2023 car I just switch off whilst in drive and it does everything.

Handbrake it randomly applies only if it's on a slope. There's no option to apply automatically as there was on Sensus, it only does it every time of the auto hold button is switched on, I'm not keen on the feature though so leave it off.

Assume your foot was on the brake though?

I've just tried it on mine and it I lift my foot off the brake a fraction before turning the knob and open the door, it doesn't switch off properly.
