Default ahhh nuts. v70 diesel

Knocking. Followed by a screaming. Turned engine off. Checked belts. Turned engine on seems the noise is coming from the cambelt side of the engine. Turned off. AA turns up, wont start. No explanation needs recovering.
Still sat at the side of the road from half past 5 this morning.
Any ideas folks ?

Sounds like cambelt tensioner or water pump.

unfortunately i'm going to agree, sounds like water pump or cam belt tensioner to me just don't turn it over until you know what it is, the whole issue gets a whole lot worse once you have bent valves to fix as well like i did!

Best of luck!

Rich

Thanks chaps. That's where I will start first then.
Looks like I'm going to have to learn very quickly.

You can pop the cam belt cover off with just your fingers/flat edged screwdriver and with a torch and clean hands peak inside and feel the tension on it (if still attached), just be pretty firm.

One thing that can happen on the cam belt end is the keyway on the cam shaft shears so the top pulley will rotate on the camshaft = everything becomes bent.

Hopefully its not as bad as that, but if it is, usually the bottom end of the engine survives and you just need to source a scrap head (£30-50) + HG kit (£20-100) + cam belt (£20-80) and labour (£2-350).

Fuel pump belt needs doing every 40k so might as well do that too*

*you have checked its not the fuel pump belt snapped/been thrown off?

Just got in from work, so will have to crack on tomorrow.
Just looking on the net for a diagram of the engine and where stuff is. Never tackled an engine like this before so havent really got a clue what I am doing. Any links to pictures or instructions would be greatly received.

These might help. When you pop the clips off the top cambelt cover pull it slightly forward then up otherwise you'll break off the lower hooks. Once it's off you'll see what I mean.
