Default XC90 Gearbox change-up rpm

I’ve recently purchased a XC90 2013 R Design with full main agents service history with 109,00miles on the clock. With no evidence of a gearbox fluid change, I’ve since done the full and drain method, repeating the process serval times using VIDA to set the level at temperature and reset the transmission fluid change counter.

As I’ve not driven the car very far since owning it, I don’t know what rpm typically it should change up at. I ask as my fathers 2011 D5 V70 Geartronic changes up around 1500 rpm and the XC90 changes up around 2000rpm. Is 2k normal or is it because it’s an R Design. Do other non sporting versions of XC90 change up at an early RPM?

In manual, I can change-up driving at 1500 and the engine does not labour. Changing up at 2000 rpm brings in the usual steering wheel vibration and my wife thinks the “clutch” is slipping! She wants to trade it in for another X5!

Can anybody clarify

Cheers

Tony

There aren't set shift points, the system calculates it according to engine load, commanded throttle and temperature. There are different profiles for different cars, I wouldn't be surprised if the thresholds are higher on the XC90 which weighs circa 400 Kg more than a XC70.

When the engine and gearbox are cold, the shift points are higher to quicken the warm up cycle.

I don't think changing the fluid will have had an impact on the shift points.

They're not called SWIMBO for nothing mate

If it's holding when it's warmed up still it's likely it's stuck in "sport" mode if the car has one that is.

Hi and thanks for the replies.

I appreciate the different parameters affecting usual engine performance and gearbox control so I do take point. However, I get to drive both cars on alternate Saturdays on the same roads at the same running temperature and they both exhibit different change up RPM hence my post.

Just to clarify, the 2011 V70 is a generation newer than the 2013 XC90. The XC90 is very much identical to the 2006 S60 my father used to own. The V70 has a ‘Sport’ option when the gearstick is moved over to the manual position where as the R Design appears but default to always be in ‘Sport’ mode holding the gear change for longer with no ‘S’ appearing on the dash when it’s gearstick moved over to the manual position. That is why I was hoping a XC90 non sport owner could comment. Or is it like you say, it’s because it weights 400kg more.

Cheers

Tony

The only likly issue (and it doesn’t sound like you have one) is that your box is a second generation one that will have been filled with fully synthetic auto fluid to JWS3324 which is the same as AW1.

And a lot of people will tell you to use JWS3309 which is not correct for your vehicle as that is standard miniral fluid with high viscosity.

You box runs on 3324, and in reality (don’t try it) would no doubt be fine with 3309. However you can’t mix the fluids as they are incompatible.

I assume that you filled the box with the correct 3324/AW1?

Hi yes both the V70 and the XC90 are using the same JWS3324 as I had some left over from the V70 fluid change which I did 4 years ago and bought more of the same.

As you are running a XC90 2012 SE Lux, when warm and accelerating normally, and not fully loaded on the flat, what rpm approximately does you car change up, assuming it’s a D5?

Cheers

Sorry, meant to say mine changes up at 2,000 on the dot. Only exception is when vehicle is stationary and gear 1 changes slightly earlier (1,800 rpm).

Obviously that excludes cold up hills where it’s a little more
