98 ron fuel ok?
Hi, on the inside of the fuel flap on my '96 1.8i 440 it says 95 ron unleaded only. Does it mean it, or is super plus unleaded 98 ron ok? Does it give this warning cos 98 ron wasn't around in 1996? It's just that with the recent rise in fuel prices 98 ron is only 2p a litre more than 95 ron, and I've heard that its possible to get better fuel economy with 98 ron, so I thought I'd give it a go. Anybody get better fuel economy this way?

RE: 98 ron fuel ok?
In actual fact, I'd recommend using "Optimax" if you're choosing that route to go down. Reason... The Fuel is alledgedly 100 octane + and is unleaded at the same time. The car will perform better, smoother, no pinking and.... Better fuel economy!! :D

RE: 98 ron fuel ok?
Hi all,
I used to have a 1990 one of the originals multi-point 460gli's and i used to suffer pinking. Now i look back when i did use super-unlead i didn't suffer pinking. You don't need to use super-unleaded but if you drive her under strain then at least you wan't get the pinking. I now use Optimax mylsef, its not all octane, but is refined their and additives added, not unlike most super unleaded petrols. Shell actually sell it in other countries too, for exmaple Aussie. I now use it instead of Redex for when i have long and hilly drives to clean out for values... See this Shell link for an animation of Optimax http://www.shell.com/home/Framework?...html&FC4=&FC5= Mark. 90 460gli 188k miles 94 850 2l 190k miles

Apologies for bringing up such an old thread again, but I was just wondering about this myself.
I have only ever used 95 RON in My 1995 2.0 440, simply because of the price difference, but recently I've seen Super at only 1p per litre more, and Optimax about 3p more. Can anybody confirm that it's actually more economical (MPG, engine wear etc) and that I'm OK to use either of the other two fuels mentioned? |

98 Fuel
Super plus is a higher octane fuel so burns hotter and technically gives you a slight improvement.
Optimax you have to be careful with (according to Volvo) as it's designed for sports cars and may be a too higher octane for the normal car also could do damage to the cylinder heads (This is according to bother Shell and Volvo although based on a 240 and 760 and a Vauxhall Corsa) Charlotte |

Optimax will NOT damage your head.
All our cars here run on LPG 115ron with this we can run very high compression ratios with no problems including a 340 with a 460 2ltr engine. |
