Central Locking and interior lights
Hi All - I'm new to this Forum and desperately looking for some help to a self induced problem.
2005 plate S60 92,000 on the clock - lovely car but the worst one I've ever had for getting my 6ft frame into the driving seat and my size 12 boots into the footwell!. Anyone else struggle with this? Taking our very strong minded 4 year grandson to the car who insists that we don't put our outside house lights on. Not a great idea given how icy the drive has been recently. So - solution was (unknown to him naturally) to put the car headlights on and off several times using the yellow button on my remote fob hidden in my trouser pocket (whilst using magic words of course!). Did the trick as far as getting him to the car safely and to his great amazement but ever since then the central locking hasn't worked from either of my two fob keys, the interior lights won't work either by opening the doors or by the light buttons but the footwell lights do both go on - and stay on permanently until some time after the car has been locked and left. Like I say a self induced problem but one which is very annoying. The central locking I can live with but I never realised how much the lights would be a problem - both the ones that stay on whilst driving and the ones that won't come on when you're trying to find your glasses on the back seat in the dark! Looking at previous posts on this forum I can see I'm not the first one to experience this and to date I've tried (unsuccessfully) the following suggestions that I've already come across:-
I'm ready to use the Basil Fawlty trick of hitting the windscreen with a branch but bearing in mind the whole problem is of my own making I think this may be a bit unfair. Any kind souls out there who may have any more suggestions please which don't involve throwing lots of £'s the way of a main dealer? Last edited by pclest; Feb 15th, 2021 at 15:25. Scan the car with VIDA for faults would be my go to suggestion.
You might be lucky and find a forum member nearby or can do this for you or if you plan to work on the car yourself just buy it.

have you tried disconnecting battery for an hour or so and reconnecting? I've used that trick a few times now and it seems to get rid of gremlins
they say on re-connection you should have key in pos2 or the airbags can go off? seems unlikely to me but I do it anyway just out of sheer fear of it happening. also check if you need radio codes or anything first.. I'm not sure if anyone has a book of spells maybe we can look into which ones you used and how to reverse them.. I'm about 6-2 and size 11s actually I think this is the most spacious car I've ever owned?? unless the V70 is just different somehow. the worst was the 3 series BM's mostly because to get ANY space at all in the rear seats i was rammed up against the steering wheel general note about faults. wihout VIDA, it's not in any way fully conclusive but an indicator of if you have faults, engine running but not driving along, hold the message button on the left stalk, and switch fogs on/off. you get some basic checks on the display screen. keep tapping the button to cycle through the different modules and see what comes up. I check mine now and again. 'ready' is ok and 'set' means a fault code has registered Last edited by stuart bowes; Feb 15th, 2021 at 16:35. Reason: fellow pedant |

Many thanks for your rapid response Stuart. I'll try the battery trick but will have to track down the radio code first.
The problem with the leg space is the gap between the drivers seat and the steering wheel. Must just be my fat thighs! |

The radio don’t have a code, it’ll just work when you reconnect the battery (or should do). They’re coded to the car.

Have you tried holding the fob up to the rear view mirror (outside the car) and trying to unlock/lock?
The solder on the circuit board holding the central locking antenna in the RVM assembly can degrade over time. |
