Default 850 with broken Tensioner

Had a 855 with a broken tensioner, and major engine damage, brought to me today and need to know one thing which way to does the tensioner go? [How do you break a cast iron tensioner and bend the plunger?]

Only asking because I never removed mine when I replaced the cam belt. The tensioner I'm refer to is the one with the sprocket, and the 14mm bolt, not the one with the plunger, thats broken too.

The new tensioner has on one side a Button style buffer and on the other a small hole which is about the right size for the plunger, however, I'm guessing it should be the button touching onto the plunger. Once again the happy Haynes doesnt show it as normal for the Haynes and as it's the weekend I don't have access to autodata [ I love that program]

I'm not about to pull mine appart again just to have a look to see which way the tensioner goes.

How can anyone try to undo a 14mm bolt with a scaffold tube ? no no no no no no !!!!! Monday the engine will have to come out so we can repair it as necessary or tell the unfortunate owner that it's beyond repair [We don't even fix Volvo's the latest car we have is from 1978 before electronics]

Default tensioner

Hi Chris it's the second one, it's the part which the plunger pushes against I believe that the button should be contacting the plunger. As said earlier I didnt take mine out when I replaced the timing belt on my GLT.

Problem solved, well the crank is 1-2 teeth out wondering if the tensioner has been snapping for ages letting off the belts tension. Won't be starting till we've looked at the valves.

I am wondering why a 1998 has the earlier engine in [needs more investigations]
