Swapping TD04 for TD05 series Turbocharger
Has anyone swapped their TD04 series Turbochargers for the TD05 Series ? I understand that the TD05 has a larger compressor housing and a 2mm larger exhaust port otherwise very similar. My TD04 18T is making nasty noises so had to swap back the 15G till I can work out what to do with my 18T as I've seen brand new TD05-16G's on Ebay for just over £200.
Several people are suggesting a Garratt if I went Garratt which one would be best ?

I have not seen these on Ebay? But to go down the garrett wrought would cost you a hell of a lot of money just for the turbo alone with steel bearing cage is getting towards 2K alone!! then you will need a different down pipe as the flange is different larger injectors, more cooling, the oil and water pipes are different and you will need to strengthen the block? at the very least it would be wise!! Have you done the rods? as well? As you can see there is a lot of work!! Personally if you liked your car with the 18 T as a lot of People seem to! why not get an 18T Turbo repair kit from Ebay ( Original Mitsubishi one ) and follow the how to guide? Cheers Greg PS I am not far from you!!!

Td04-td05
The postage on the TD04 kit is outrageous I think £15 otherwise I would. Several 850 owners are close to me seems theres a trend. Wonder if you own the very nice black estate on Earlham Road

The TD04 rebuild kit costs £15 for postage as it comes from Japan.
It is a very reasonable price to charge. Sending anything halfway across the world is always going to cost more than it would to send something within the UK. There are other rebuild kits that are cheaper and less postage if you search eBay. |

They are normally from HK so it maybe about right? But in the long run it would work out loads cheaper to buy the rebuild kit? Rather than Another Turbo? I have seen quite a few 850's going around the city lowered and with Prancing moose stickers on the side!!! Sorry I am not the owner of the Black 850!!! I have 2 volvo's an S reg S40 2.0 T and a Green 854 T 5R Which is Currently Being Rebuilt and will be finished about December time then it will have to be run in as well. I was looking at your spec as well and see you have an Auto I don't think the Box would take the amount of Torque produced by a Garrett it would most likely Obliterate it very quickly unless your going to have a manual conversion? Cheers Greg

TD04 to TD05
having a manual swap isn't an option I drive on hand controls so it really wouldn't be economic to convert a manual to fluid clutch or quickshift [I've considered it regardless of what other cars I have] I keep thinking about getting a prancing moose sticker, there are too many already.
Reason I'm thinking of the TD05-16T rather than getting my TD04-18T rebuilt is the compressor housing on the TD05 is larger as is the CFM, TD05's don't spike as harsh as the TD04-18Ts do. some of the TD05's do have an angled housing this I've been reliably informed can be swapped so no cutting or welding is necessary I'm very interested in where the research comes from regarding what torque the Aisin Warner 50-42LE box can cope with. I've spoken with Borg Warner in the states who are saying as long as the fluid is maintained, cooled and the box isn't held at high revs in gear they cannot see why the box won't be good for upwards of 400 bhp. Age was a concern otherwise it was a tough box. Three autobox specialists have also said they can see no reason why the box won't handle what I'm thinking as long as I don't sit at traffic lights holding the revs at 3000 in gear on the handbrake so the fluid heats up. I'm not interested in the amount of power and torque Russ has in the yellow peril, although it would be fun. On a lighter note I do like the olive green of the T-5R keep thinking about a colour change on my T5 to cover the scratches Charlotte
