Default TDI bottom pulley

Hi all,

I.ve got what may be a daft question, but...

The bottom pulley/damper on the 2.5d, should the aux belt drive grooved pulley be tight on the pulley?

Im slowly working my way through doing the cambelt, and i was struggling to get the upper and lower tin plates/dust guards out.

With a bit of persuasion I managed to pull them out and parts of the plates have been polished clean and thin in a few places. When poking at the bottom pulley with a screwdriver the grooved pulley that drives the auxbelt can be wiggled around, appears almost spring loaded back towards the engine.

I'm assuming this isn't normal and a new pulley is required!
I've got to take it off anyway to do the belt so... lemme know if its normal or not!

Thanks!

Ben

I'd say it's not normal. It sounds as though the rubber is close to failing. If it does fail, it's a hefty piece of spinning metal to come free and the results are unlikely to be pretty.

It's a while since I did mine but so far as I recall you couldn't move the inner and outer parts of the pulley relative to one another with any normal amount of hand force.

If it were mine I'd be replacing it asap.

However I suspect it may now be a part that Volvo have discontinued so you may be forced to go for an aftermarket one unless VW/Audi still do them.

Cheers Martin, appreciate the confirmation.

I can move it with 1 or 2 fingers. It seemed like it was intentionally spring loaded, having looked a bit further into it it's not an even movement around the circumference of the pulley.

I'll start hunting for a replacement!

Ta.

It failed on my 855 TDI, horrendous noise and it took the serpentine belt tensioner with it. Ugly experience. Luckily I was literally 150 meters from my usual service station.

I have replaced it for the third time couple of months ago. Made by SNR...

Check out the scary photos.

Aye, that looks painful!

A replacement ordered INA (i think) with new bolts and washer. OEM was far to much at the moment unfortunately.

I'll get some pictures once Ive got it off, probably Friday or Saturday. There looks to be lots of excess rubber dust (up to 6mm!) and snot in the whole area.

There's also a complete kit, including screw and diamond washer, from GT Automotive https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/272597560427

https://gtautomotiveparts.co.uk/

If you do purchase I'd be interested to hear any feedback you may have as I plan to purchase the same.

OOh thats nasty , when my TDi had a fit & fell apart i used these folks

https://www.heritagepartscentre.com/uk/

And said was the Audi AEL 2.5 tdi engine I got everything I needed including the diamond coated washer . YOU MUST fit the diamond washer between damper & sprocket , then find someone with a proper cordless impact wrench and give it everything it has . My local Indie used this technique and never had one fall apart

One, or two halves of the bottom pulley.

The pulley has taken chunks out of the cam belt tensioner bolt whilst spinning.

So. My advice, if you haven't already, stick a new pulley on next time round!

Now to try get it back together!

Cheers
Ben
