Default Random spring compressor question / strut spring

Hi I'm just thinking about changing the 18yr old springs and struts _ the front ones on my s40 but I was wondering what kind of spring compressors people use here.tempted to buy a hydraulic floor mounted compressor like a clarke 1000sc or similar + Would anyone knew how much a garage would charge for fitting the springs into the struts , i.e. pre_assemble them?

I just use the wind up ones from local motor factors - example:

Same, double hook manual compressors from a local store. I hate the fact that they are double hook, though. At least one hook always suspiciously hangs instead of sitting properly. And I doubt I would be able to safely do rears with these, as they are smaller diameter than fronts. Just get some fat single hook ones.

Yea good point the single grip are def better. -)

It's def a diy job if you have time and a safe place. Not on tarmac or shingle!

I use a single hook wind up and they have the tendency to slide on the spring as the spring is not flat and make the hook only touch a small edge.I can tell you if they slide to the same side it is not easy to get them in place again.
I use a small vice grip to keep them on place.
The hooks were made by Monroe and should work better .

I have a pair made by Sykes Pickavant, about 30 years old and no problems with sliding etc. One end has double swivel hooks so always fit snuggly on the spring and the other has a small adjustable bolt to grip the spring and hold everything solid.

That one has a fixing bolt to prevent from sliding and the double hook takes the spring on two places upside so it will not slide and it is not a sigle grip one. It will work better.
Back in the old days they to make things using more and solid tools ,now they try to make it from a chocolate paper and a piece off plastic just to make more money.
