I changed the head gasket on a 1984 VW polo 1272cc in a lunch time in my work car park once
left the manifolds attached to the head so you only need to undo the down pipe, head bolts, rocker cover and a few wires and 2 cables and 2 clips on the cambelt cover and loosen the water pump bolts which tensions the cam belt. ...beat that

There must be someone out there that dropped off the sump and head, then swapped the piston rings on their motor in a layby on the A47 at night :-) |

My mother delivered Spitfires. When the Rolls Roce Merlin failed at fortunately enormous altitude in a thunder and snow storm gale. Mum re-applied her powder and lippy, rebuilt the engine ... all during the glide ... re-started by the motion of the glide, shot down several hun despite not officially having ammunition, and completed the delivery. Mum stood with pride when she was court martialed for taking two minutes longer than the allowed time for the flight.
If I have under stated the occurrence that is because careless talk cost lives. Hush hush ... . |

P.S.
I do by the way recognise and apologise to the members who have posted their own achievements, re 240, and other car, emergency repairs. If Mum had delivered a different aircraft, she could have done the miracle ... in a Hurricane !!!!!! . Last edited by Stephen Edwin; Oct 23rd, 2020 at 12:47. |

Cheers for all the help folks
Got it all sorted I think. New oil seals are in New belt on. And new drive belts on. All seems to be running well, have not driven yet just on the drive for a few minutes. Only slight problem was power steering tension bolt looked like it was about to snap so belt was tightened with a pry bar. Next job is cleaning the crankcase pressure grubbings I think. Thanks to Alf for loan of the crank pulley tool |
