Engine System service required
Hi all,
I have a feeling that this fault has been done to death in the past from what I have read. Yet never found anything too conclusive. Also. It many of the issues seem to relate to the non-DPF models. I have a 2.0D 2005 non-DPF model with 100,000 miles on the clock. I have been convinced for some time what the issue is the egr valve, something which I will be removing and cleaning today. On start-up the car is rather smokey and at times the idle seems a little rough until it reaches running temperature. After this point there is nothing to suggest any fault with the car. On occasion I get the "Engine system service required" message on the dash, I can't seem to recreate when this occours. I have an 80mile round trip commute and I can make the drive without the message appearing, yet other times it will appear before I am even out of the street. It used to come on more frequently however I have ran a fair few tanks of BP ultimate and some EGR cleaner additive through the car and since then it became less common. Does anyone know what causes this error message? The manual refers to the DPF, which is no use when your car doesn't have one! Will I need to get a diagnostic machine on when the code is present? I am concerned by the smoke when cold, I hoping it doesn't lead to anything too costly! Thanks for all your help. |

Hello,
Are you losing any oil? I unplugged my egr valve and it seemed to run a lot better as cleaning the egr valve seemed a little long winded. |

I don't seem to be loosing any oil.
Just started to remove the egr and turns out it has been blanked. I don't know the full extent of it. Any way of telling if it has been coded out of the ecu? While attempting to remove the EGR, on what I assume is the exhaust side I noticed a lot of fluid in the pipe. It was lipping at the top of the rubber hose that joined into the pipe. What could cause this? It is likely that this is the cause of my smoke on start up? |

It's unlikely it has been coded out of the ECU..
Do you know what fluid it is? It's common for the egr valve to be covered in oil grime. I have the same thing with my 2.0D and haven't got the root cause of it yet. Have you tried cleaning out the throttle body and Maf / map sensors... I have read at least 25 posts from people with similar problems, solutions point in the direct of injectors being faulty / glow plugs being bad / valve stem seals being worn if it loses oil and smokes badly on first start up. |

I can't confirm what the fluid is, however is is clear and going by the orange corrosion marks on the pipe where the rubber hose fits in I would assume is condensation or water.
I have not yet tried the sensors. I will give them a clean while I am at it. I guess in the past a previous owner has had egr issues and blanked it off. I would like to return the car to running with one however struggling to get it off I may just pay a garage for the pleasure. |

If the egr has been blanked, just make sure the grey plug is disconnected. If it is still connected to the egr, this will cause a light to come on. My advice is to leave the egr blanked and make sure unplugged. Light should go off if this was the problem but if not, get the codes read. Be advised that a blanked and unplugged egr will always come up as a code but ignore this as you know why!

From the look of things the previous owner has left the electrical connector hooked up. So I will try running with that until I replace the egr valve.
My fears of fluid in the pipework was nothing to worry about. It turns out, after extra reading, it was the cooling fluid in the egr cooler! After reassembling the engine it was smokier than usual, but cleared up fine after it warmed up. I did notice while watching the engine idle that air bubbles are in the fuel. Running from what I assume is a fuel filter/pump through a clear hose to the injectors? Please forgive my lack of engine geography as I don't have a manual for the car. The small bubbles come in spits and spurts and seem to coincide with when the engine has a small stutter. I'd this a known issue? Is there any quick thoughts before I read up on this some more? It's seeming what I thought was all down to the egr may well be a number of smaller unrelated issues. Is it worth replacing the egr? What will I gain and does it make passing my emissions test harder with it blanked? |

Personally, I wouldn't worry about the egr valve. I blanked mine off and unplugged mine. I think this is the common approach. In regards to air in the fuel, I initially thought it could be down to this and had a garage replace the fuel filter and bleed the air out of the fuel. Made no difference really. If you disconnect the egr valve with it blanked off and the problem goes away then you know it's the egr valve. Process of elimination stuff.
