Default FRONTEND VIBRATIONS

HI,

I HAVE JUST PURCHASED A 97 2.0 SE WITH 115K FROM AN AUCTION AND I HAVE NO SERVICE RECORDS (I AM TRYING TO CONTACT THE PREVIOUS OWNERS).
THE CAR VIBRATES WHEN ACCELERATING ABOVE 65MPH BUT DISAPEARS WHEN I EASE OFF THE THROTTLE.
I HAVE HAD THE WHEELS BALANCED AND REPLACED A WORN TRACK ROD, WHICH HAS MADE A DIFFERENCE BUT I STILL HAVE THE PROBLEM.
IF ANYONE HAS SUGGESTIONS AS WHAT NEXT TO LOOK FOR (APART FROM MY WALLET) I WOULD BE GRATEFUL.

CHEERS

>HI ALL,

AFTER SEVERAL VISITS TO QUICK-FIT'S SYDENHAM BRANCH IN SOUTH LONDON THEY FINALLY GOT THE WHEEL BALANCE RIGHT, BUT STILL LEFT ME WITH THE STEERING WHEEL MISALIGNED AFTER TRACKING.
I TOOK THE CAR TO A VOLVO DEALER IN OPINGTON IN KENT, WHERE A MECHANIC GAVE IT A ROAD TEST. HIS CONCLUSION WAS THAT CASE HARDENING OF THE DRIVE SHATFT BEARINGS INSIDE THE GEARBOX COULD BE THE PROBLEM. HE HAD APPARENTLY HAD A VEHICLE WITH THE SAME PROBLEM WHICH TOOK HIM A COUPLE OF DAYS TO IDENTIFY.
ANY IDEAS WHERE I MIGHT GET A BOX CHEAPER.
COST TO REMOVE DRIVE SHAFTS TO CHECK £100, TO REPLACE GEARBOX APPROX £1900.
ANY IDEAS OF A CHEAPER ANSWER?

Does the car have alloys? A slight crack / dent will cause your car to vibrate and will be more noticeable at certain speeds. It will also not necessarily show-up on a balance test. This may be worth checking before spending loads of cash!

Well you could get a box from a scrapyard or if interested i have a M5P gearbox (=the one you have on your 2.0 N/A) for sale with only 16000 km on it. It is from 1999 and sold with waranty.

The M5P gearbox (and the M3P used on 1.6 and 1.8 N/A) where redesigned in 1998 the first two years had a rare problem where the input bearing locked up on a few cars - the one i have for sale is of the new "design".

I could offet to mount the gearbox for you - only problem is I live in Copenhagen.
