Blown Turbo on 05 S40 1.6d
I have a Turbo failure on my S40 1.6d and have removed it for inspection only to find that it is missing the tips from two of the fins. My question is does anyone know where the bits of metal are likely to have gone and could they cause more damage unless tracked down and removed?

well if it is not inside the turbo, the it is stuck somewhere in intercooler or that pipe coming from turbo to the the radiator, if there is some oil in that pipe, then its probably stuck there, oil works like glue to some small peaces of sand, stones, and metal. So it should be in that bottom air pipe or stuck inside radiator/intercooler.
Something must have damaged the blades, find where it come from! 95% that it come from air filter, change that. My guess. |

If the turbo bearing has gone then it is essential that the filter in the turbo feed pipe is changed , in fact change the pipe AND the banjo bolts , the lower banjo bolt has the filter in ..

You have to change bearings(I mean some company or someone who does that and have some special balancing machine) or get a new turbo, it's only mater of time until crankshaft will brake or worse.
Dunno about flushing that radiator, theoretically remove top hose and bottom one, then use pressure washer or just a garden hose to flush it |

Turbo failure is almost always caused by its oil supply , either poor quality oil or lack of oil due to blocked feed pipe ( or filter in the lower banjo bolt in your case ) again caused by poor oil ... OR Lack of oil , ie runnng the sump dry ...

Shopping list
So I need to replace the following?
New Turbo Oil feed pipe (I broke it taking the turbo off anyway ) Banjo bolts Air filter (Will have oil on it) What oil should be used? I have only very recently purchased this car and have a feeling that the last garage to service the car may have used the wrong oil. Any other ideas or part numbers very welcome! yes thats a good start , you will have to get the correct turbo part numbers from the dealer there are a multitude of different turbos on these engines .
Oil , use a good 0w/30 A5/B5 quality oil ... These 1.6 D engines do like the correct oil as the sump is quite small .

Conversation with Turbo specialist
I had a conversation with a turbo specialist today who informs me that these engines suffer with carbon build up in the filters around the oil system.
He advised that the sump and oil pump be removed and cleaned among other things but he was quite vague when I tried to get more information from him. Can anyone shed any light on the full list of filter that will require removal and cleaning? Last edited by S40Matt; Jan 17th, 2011 at 19:03. |
