Grinding noise on acceleration
Hi, first post so sorry if this is in the wrong place. I have an XC90 AWD D5 2009 Auto with 92,000 miles on clock. I have what I can only describe as a grinding noise when accelerating through 1st and 2nd. Also on occasions while cruising at around 50mph there is a shudder from the engine that stops when I lift off the accelerator and then goes. I also think that the rear wheels have no drive so the AWD is not working. The car drives ok but obviously concerned about the noise. Anyone had the same issue or know what the problem is and how to fix it and if possible, an approximate cost?
Thanks in advance, Rob. |

Possible AWD sleeve failure if later models suffer same fate!

In my view, not the spline gear. This was prevalent on earlier XC90 (02 -06) but an Uprated sleeve fitted later than that. There are no other symptoms than no rear wheel drive when spline fails. (Ask me how I know!).
Sounds like engine mounts to me. Hope this helps John l |

I would also say engine mounts. Especially check the two vacuum mounts and the solid one under the crankshaft pulley.

Thanks all. If it is the engine mounts, anyone know an approximate cost to get fixed?
Thanks again, Rob. |

Rob, are you ok with working on your own vehicle? Greg's suggestion is mine also.
If so the front mount and mount by crank pulley are very easy. I would certainly have at look at crank mount as they deteriorate badly. Front and rear are vacuum mounts and can be tested in situ with vacuum gauge. Check rear mount visually from underneath as if it has failed it can allow gearbox to contact subframe.

Check engine mounts - if they drop the output shaft from the transfer box comes in contact with the heat shield on the steering rack and you get a metallic grinding noise...
Also check the output shaft (transfer box) bearing, if that has play it can cause a propshaft vibration.

We had this problem with our 07 XC90. Strangely sometimes it was ok... Like the Mrs driving like miss daisy. It came with a little knock sometimes driving over bumps. I had replaced both vacuum mounts and gearbox mount when we got the car 2 years back. The mount under the crankshaft looked new and a little play... Not enough to convince me it was that . My top mount the one that is also mounted on the strut brace was worn but heard people replace these with no effect... I bit the bullet and got trade price and fitted. Now the car drives like new. Even if that bush has a little play... Change it for all its worth.

RobS1403, what was the outcome of this please? Did you replace the engine mounts? Did anything change?
My '07 XC90 D5 is making some odd mechanical noises at low speeds (sometimes a knock, sometimes a grinding/rumbling) and I'm wondering whether the engine mounts might be the cause. |
