Default Mass Airflow Meter - How long should they last?

About 18 months ago, I had a problem with my 98' S70 TDi which turned out to be the mass airflow thingy so this was changed under warranty and the problem was solved.

It now looks (about 40k miles later) that the problem has returned so I am guessing that it needs replacing again.

So how long are these things suppose to last? Is there any way of checking them to see if they are at fault prior to letting my dealer loose on it?

PS

It's under warranty so cost isn't an issue but the hassle of getting the car booked in is just a pain.

Yes. But, that's probably because you still have the old type. The V70's were fitted with the smaller cheaper versions, which have been notoriously problematic. My Volvo dealer told me that he has never had to change a MAF on the earlier models, pre-June 1996, but has had to do so frequently on the later models.
