Glovebox from hell 850Glt Saloon
Hi all
This is a strange question i know but here goes... I can no longer open my glovebox! Ive tried the normal things like hitting it, swearing at it and even shouting at it but it still wont open. Ive double checked that it isnt locked..which it isnt but i still cant open it! Is there another way of opening it without breaking anything? Any help greatly appreciated as ive got all my documents in it |

But as future advice, I wouldn't keep any documents in your glovebox. Lei Chan |

I think you have a problem...
It's a subject that has been dicussed before, there doesn't seem to be a good or easy solution :-( Search this forum for "glovebox". Richard |

Search for the solution first, but I think you're going to have to break it open, or better, get a dealer to do it and any other damage will be their problem.
At least you'll get club discount on the replacement lid.... |

There is a way, it basically involves wedging the lid open as far as you can then protecting the surrounding trim with cardboard & duct tape.
You then saw through the wire lock bracket to get it open. Once you have it open you can then replace the bit you have sawn through and the broken parts in the lid which caused the original problem. A google search on news groups should give you more detailed instuctions. It's also been covered in the clubs 'technical' magazine. |

Same thing happened to me, I was going to break it open then tried the method outlined by Chris Roberts and bingo. There's a litle lug that breaks off the mechanism. The replacement is only a couple of quid from a dealer, a glove box lid is more like £90

RE: Glovebox from hell 850Glt Saloon
Hi phil,
sorry you seem to be having problems and even the 850 keeper can't solve it for you, but i can as everyone alway seems to ask me in the end who knows of me, especially on volvospeed and t5uk. You first have to decide if you wish to keep the glove box cover. The first step presumes you do, so you need to mask of the dash area where the glovebox lid closes. Get a hacksaw blade and bend into a L shape. Now carefully try and prise the down open to enable you to put the blade behind around the centre area. It does take a bit to get in but once there you are attempting to cut the small look if you remeber that the latch attaches to. it mill take quite a lot of time to do as you have to do it twice. Once cut the lid will drop down, you need then to purchase a new hook and within the glove box lib the catch mechanism. What causes the problem is a small priece of metal that breaks that activates the latch. Method two is to drill in the centre at the top, where by you gain access to the latch mechanism to pop it open. replacement latch mechanism is all that is needed plus a volvo badge or what ever to cover the drill hole. Last method is either method two or by coming in through the bottom of the lid by popping the hinge bolts and bascially wrecking the lid. I eventually went this method as i lost my patience with step one and so had to stick my hand in my pocket for lid cover, lid and mechasism, dont ask the price! hope this helps.
