If your headlights are trimmed with a dark grey plastic then they are Halogen lights, if they are Silver all over they are Xenons.

You can find local Headlight restoration guys on Google, or you can buy a kit from Halfords like Autoglym headlight restorer. Did mine a few years ago.

I have polished the outsides of my lenses, more than a couple of times now, big improvement, but on further examination it seems that the insides of the lens are also not very clear now, so I suppose I have to get new light assemblies, I dont think I dare try to get the outsides off. Has anybody else noted this problem?

When my wife first for her XC90 they were so bad you couldn't see the bulbs inside.
I got a Holt's kit from motor parts direct. A little over a tenner.
Came with a drill attachment and lots of sand paper for it.
Then a sponge for it with a bottle of cutting compound.
A buffing up cloth and a can of clear lacquer.
The trick is to apply the clear lacquer regular to protect it from the elements.
Maybe 6 monthly or even monthly.
