Default Help! Loud squeal in time with wheel rotation.

I’ve just noticed the car makes a loud squeal each time the wheels turn. I can’t figure out if it’s coming from the front or back. Only clue I have is it doesn’t happen in reverse.

Long shot as I know I haven’t shared much info to work with but wondering if the car is safe to use for my commute. My garage doesn’t currently have a courtesy car so can’t book it in 😟

Any advice appreciated. Thanks.

Probably parking brakes binding on back wheels.

Jack car up and see if you can turn a back wheel by hand, with gearbox in neutral and parking brake off. I bet one wheel is binding.

Had this once on my V70, 'drjarmin'. There turned out to be nothing mechanically amiss. A small stone had got itself lodged between the brake pad and disk. The resulting squeal, which varied with road speed, was concerning, but no harm was done and there was no lasting damage. If you are lucky it may be something as simple as that.

Regards, John.

I've had the stone stuck between the brake disc and plate situation and the noise is alarming.
I found a quiet road to reverse on where the noise instantly disappeared and managed to get it to dislodge.

If the squeal is in forward and reverse, I'd suspect brake hardware.

It’s only in forward. Reverse is silent. So maybe need to find a long stretch see if I can clear it. I do park on gravel so might be.

Thanks. Can try on the weekend. I replaced rear pads and rotors about 3 months ago so maybe bedding in.

Also check the 4 discs to see if any have unusual scoring around them.

No need in that instance. As 'cheshired5' said, reversing where safe is usually enough to dislodge the culprit. If this fails, you might need to remove a wheel, although that may depend on the type of wheel that you have - some afford much better access to the brakes than others.

Regards, John.
