I know a whole lot less than nothing about all this tech stuff but could the reason for no alert be because the cameras are turned off and therefore not emitting some sort of signal?

I'm pretty certain that the camera alerts work from data stored on the nav maps. If for example the maps are not up to date or new cameras are installed but not yet on the data base then they wouldn't be recognised, so no warning, but these have been there for 10+ years and show up on the nav maps. I can see your reasoning regarding emitting some sort of signal but not sure if they do or not, unlike handheld devices which can be picked up with a passive sensor as fitted to some aftermarket camera detectors.
Problem is these cars are now too clever for their own good, more like a computer on wheels with all the inherent problems. Who'd have thought a few years ago you would need to reboot a car. I'll have a look through the menu's and see if something has mysteriously unchecked itself.

Yes modern cars are more fuel efficient with more powerful engines[for a given engine size]than their older counterparts, but then you get all these modules and sensors etc. and the more you fit the more there is to go wrong!

I don't, I just wonder if Dippydogs comment about a signal could potentially be true in the sense that Volvo are made aware if the cameras are active or not, regardless of technology, therefore if you pass one that's not active it doesn't bleep. That said: 1. Would you trust the sat-nav to be correct? (I know I wouldn't) 2. If no VOC then it should ping regardless and in both directions 3. I've never heard of cameras relaying their status to car OEMs such that they can then update the sat-nav in real-time, indeed, In France any indication of speed camera location is an offence and they will book you for it . . . .
