Default oil on rocker cover, lots gone from engine

volvo 850 T5 1996 197,000 miles

I acquired the car of my father abou a year ago. There has always been a small ammount of oil loss appearing on top of the rocker cover. We always just thought this was the filler cap seal. It was a small ammount so just kept an eye on the level. However, in the last couple of weeks oil use/loss has increased. I have been unable to tell where it is coming from but drips off the sump plug. The on route to work lots of smoke came out the exhaust and lots of oil left the engine ( do not know from where) The top of the rocker cover had lots of oil on top of it. There is a black pvc tube connects to the top of the rocker cover. Might this have produced the oil instead of the filler cap? I've read something about PCV pipes. might these be blocked/bust and need replacing. does it sound like the turbo seal? Help please kind folk.

I have since filled the car back up with oil and driven in approx 50 miles (very gently ) with no nasty smoke but it does still leak a bit. thanks John

three main oil leek ares i am aware of on the t5 oil return pipes filler cap seal and main rear oil seal the pcv system if blocked is prone to blow the rear main oil seal however the oil from that would leak from around the gearbox to engine area

The pipe going into the rocker cover is part of the pcv system, check the securing ring and the crankcase pressure by placing your palm over the filler hole @ idle...
cheers

thanks for the replies. Do you know if german, swedish french sell the oil trap and associated pipework?

If the oil trap was blocked what are the chances of it having damaged another seal? The turbo oil feed seal i'm not so worried about but if a main engine seal has gone i think i'll chuck the thing away. Shame because its the best car i've ever had.
