Default is this good or bad?

I have owned a V50 2.0D SE from new, it is registered on the V5 as a Euro IV.

Toook it to a dealer to have the diesel additive tank topped up and gauge reset as per the service schedule, to be told that they could not find the additive tank, so it must be a Euro III.

Is this good or bad? I am paying Euro IV tax, so that must be good.

what are the technical differences, no DPF..anything else different?

Thanks

I think that's just about it, no other differences.

I have 09.2004 S40 and in the engine bay i have a sticker on the proximal end of the bonnet just above the cowl stating it's a EURO IV, however i too do not have a DPF nor the additive tank... which makes me glad, DPF's have there problems, so that's one worry less.

But why then do i have that sticker??

ok, thanks for that. mine also has E4 stamped on the underside of the bonnet.

However, I have read on another thread that euro IV is more expensive to tax than euro III......is it worth me trying to change the V5 information?

youd be surprised how many garages "forget" to top this up . if you have two large pipes going into the throttle body it is euro IV with EOLYS fluid to be topped up , a single pipe is euro III

The quantity of euro IV with particle filter is dropping off rapidly from 2007 model year .

well I`m very confused, according to DVLA website all 2006 2.0D V50s are euro 4, one is a DPF version, one is`nt. this might explain why mine is registered as E4, but does not have a DPF.

From first post, I'm curious when you say that dealer couldn't find additive tank. Surely, would they know what type car was by looking at Service sytem software (VADIS). without touching the car ?

That said, I made some enquiries at my dealer last year re type of exhaust system for E4 as I'd heard that the newer engines didn't necessarily have DPF fitted. It seemed then that no one could be sure and the technician just said that until we plug the car in, we don't now exactly what the service schedule is or what is actually fitted on any car as Volvo do make changes without announcing unless a comlplete new design has been introduced.

Re E4/E3 type. I think I've read that E3 engine has lower C02 emmisions (sub150g/km) and is actually in a lower tax band as a result.

The E4 is generally a cleaner emmitting engine due to virtually no smoke, even though C02 is slightly higher. When I bough mine, paperwork said that car was an E3, but come service time, I discovered that it was in fact an E4.

I suppose this proves that there is a bit of confusion out there.

It is indeed a grey area .
even the VIN isnt always right
look at the 8th character along ..

3 = Euro 3 outside EU

4 = Euro 4 without particle trap EU

5 = Euro 4 With Particle trap

Make of that what you will :-)

my 8th number is indeed a 4, so can I assume it is a EuroIV (as per V5) but does not have a particle filter?

to answer the previous question about hooking it up for a software check, I booked it in to have the additive topped up and gauge reset, having had it serviced at an independent. So the garage put it on the ramp, discovered a total absence of the additive tank and returned the car to me.....no need to hook it up to the computer I suppose.

after all this, the next question is how Volvo can justify a quote of £425 for a service, which would appear to be just oil and filters?
