Alan - thanks - I've been to Halfrauds and picked up some Millers Diesel Power Sport 4 - I'm gonna fill up and give it a go. Still searching for a cheap solution to the cat (and personal hygiene!) issue. There's only 45,000 miles on her - isn't that early for a Cat to Kaput? (£800 plus labour plus dealer add-ons).

A guy mentioned a product called 'Cataclean' to me today - I've researched it today and I'm thinking of gambling on it. Anyone on here used / tried it?

Cheers,

Greg.

hi,

Eggy smell from my car vanished instantly after replacing the pollen filter and spraying aircon disinfectant foam in the air vents. Have you changed your pollen filter lately?

Why are you so convinced the smell is coming from the cat? you shouldn't be smelling anything from the exaust assembly from within the cabin, especially while driving as you say, that would be a major health hazard.

try a fuel cleaner in the tank like forty or something to clean all of the fuel system.

We've got a 2005 S40 D SE (got it about 6 months ago).

We absolutely love it, however, about a month ago we started to get a really 'eggy' smell - evident when taking off just after starting, and VERY evident when giving it a little go-go (take-off from junctions, etc...) especially around third gear.

The day before we took it to a dealer, I gave it a good wash, and the smell vanished (ordinary hose & sponge) - hence no smell for the dealer to detect anything! Three weeks later, and it's back with a vengeance!

The car is clean, and I've read bit about catalytic converters and alternators overcharging batteriesm but I'm unsure where to go from here.

Any ideas? Thanks folks.

Greg.
I have now got the very same problem. I have a Volvo S40 SE diesel (55 plate) and only recently started to smell when i turn on the air con or even the fans. When I get out of the car the smell is also coming from under the bonnet, then it just goes. Then when i start the car again fans on etc the smell comes back. It smells almost like a really bad cabbage or farty smell (no its not me passing wind) Has anyone had any definate solutions?

Please help.

It's bacteria in the air con system that gives you the old granny wee smell some dettol on the pollen filter helps a bit. Can't remember the name but Halfrauds sell an aerosol "bomb" that you set off in the car with the air con running and it sanitises the system.
