General: 850: worn inner cv joint

Hi All,

My car has all the symptoms of worn inner cv joint. Does anyone know how to diagnose WHICH inner cv joint is the worn out one? Also, is one side usually more likely to wear out than the other? - I have heard that the passenger side one is usually the one to fail. Obviously it will be a pain if I end up replacing the wrong one. I have bought a secondhand shaft; from which I will remove the inner cv joint (I am hoping that it will come off without too much hassle)

i found that without changing the complete driveshaft, the repair is a short lived one, with alot of fiddling and hastle to rectify.
secondly,
if you jack up one of the front wheels, and put it into gear with the engine running, the wheel will turn. then turn the steering full lock in both directions, when you hear a sort of clicking noise, you have found out which side is the faulty one. remember, you will just need to lift one wheel up off the ground at a time. also it could be either joint gone, mine had gone on the o/s drivers side.

you can find out if the inner joint is noisy this way too, by jacking one wheel up at a time and driving it when the car is stationary. you will notice only the wheel off the ground will turn.
when you hear the noise of the turning shaft, you will know which one it is then

i think genuine volvo driveshafts are £250 to £350. they are the best. you can get non genuine which are approx £110 exchange, but watch out for the poor design boot circlip, they sometimes work loose. get one with good quality clips holding boots on

Just tried out the method descibed above for diagnosing which cv joint has gone.
Didn't hear any noise at all unfortunately. But at least I could see clearly that both inner cv boots are in good condition.

Any other suggestions?

Also, to remove the drivers side inner cv joint, is the intermediate shaft removed from the diff; or is the inner cv joint between the wheel and the support bearing?

Hi,

Rocking/jerking particularly at low speeds and when decelerating. I thought it was engine mounts but as all four have now been replaced it can't be those.

I am seriously considering replacing BOTH driveshafts. Any idea where I can buy them at reasonable prices?

its hard to diagnose without seeing the car.
i got a driveshaft from my local auto shop, exchange it cost about £90. but had to put a good circlip on because the outer one was poor quality and came off. genuine shafts are more than twice the price from volvo.
maybe try changing one at a time to see if you cure the problem. there not too difficult to change.
