SOS 244 stuck in france
Hi all, I'm posting this from a hotel in Alsace Lorraine. Last night driving back from italy to london, my 1978 244 DL dual fuel did something she had never done before: she broke down. The oil lamp switched on suddenly and the engine basically stopped. I knew it wasn't an oil problem, as I had replaced before leaving Rome last week. The start motor spins but the engine does not start at all. It looks like nor gas or fuel get to the engine.
I am waiting for the mechanic tomorrow morning but I am concerned about the language barrier and the fact that it is an old car with all the spare parts problem related, let alone that is loaded with luggage and marooned some 500 miles away from london. Suggestions from anyone who might have a possible interpretation that could help me putting the guy in the right direction will be most welcome. Cheers, leonardo |

All of the above should be ok. But I will have them checked properly tomorrow, thanks. My principal concern is that there might be some difficult to source spares involved. Thanks again, L

Could you post a bit more info. Does the car have carbs or fuel injection? If the latter the fuel injection pump relay is notorious for leaving you 'high & dry.' If you turn the ignition key with the drivers door open can you hear the fuel pump running?
There is also an ignition module on the inside wing on the passengers side. These can go all of a sudden and leave you without a spark. As mentioned. Post as much info as possible and hopefully the guys here will be able to help you out. Best of luck Scott |

Thanks Scott, the car is a carburettor model. Does this still imply some fuse/relay-related problem? It behaved as if was completely out of fuel but I'm sure there is a bit of both LPG and petrol as I was about to stop and refuel.
Cheers, leonardo |

dual fuel
as it is dual fuel= i assume lpg
it should start either on lpg or petrol--- on lpg you bypass many of the few relays etc concerned the petrol system- in extreme need for the future- i have just taken out 2.1 engine carburettor from a 1983 estate-- location gattwick -- if you are in need of it ============================================= I believe it sits in the carburettor- there is a rubber diagphram- they are notorious for splitting -- and bring your car to a hold- costs are minimal-problemcausing extreme. tell me if you are interestewd in the engine anyway as i will otherwise weigh it in at the scrappy |

Hi and thanks for your reply,
I was running on lpg when it happened, so the carb was not involved I assume? Thanks for the offer, I hope I will be back in london not a bankrupt man and that I will be able to ponder it! |

Could it be anything miraculously simple like a dislodged fuse in the fuse box?

Check the timing belt is intact, sounds like it may have snapped on you.
